My Self-Summary

With acknowledgment to my friend Michael for the idea, eight random things about me:

(1) I’m fascinated with clocks and timekeeping.
(2) I went to high school with the Indigo Girls.
(3) I’ve been to Nice and the isles of Greece (and 23 other countries).
(4) (But) I’ve never been outside Georgia for more than 3 weeks.
(5) I don’t own a car, by choice; I get around by bicycle, scooter, and public transit.
(6) I'm certified as a braille transcriptionist and I studied Sign Language in high school.
(7) I love public art, even when it’s not good.
(8) I have three dogs.
Now in Esperanto
Mi neniam estos flua kiel li, sed nun mi povas komuniki iomete Esperante.

Kaj fine: Se vi komprenis ĉi tiun mesaĵon, certe vi estas bonvola skribi al mi.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm a cog in the machine (but keep reading; I can defend it): I modify the database and website presence for a non-profit organization, with the goal of making things easier to use so that people can do their jobs more efficiently. It gives me the opportunity to learn new things constantly, to interact with interesting and enjoyable people, and to bring home enough money that I can pay my bills and still have some left over for the occasional splurge. It is exactly where I want my life to be.

I’m really good at

I'm good at traveling:
(1) I can find interesting places to go (e.g., Scotland, San Marino, Belize, Guatemala, Jerusalem, Jordan, Egypt).
(2) I can find interesting places to stay (which have included a haunted castle, cliffside rooms, a mountaintop observatory, an oceanside room with hanging beds, a treehouse, a cave, a Bedouin village, a desert camp, and a houseboat).
(3) I can get around (using vehicles ranging from a gondola to a bulldozer; driving comfortably on the left as well as the right; and using all kinds of public transit).
(4) I can enjoy the culture (I once sat with a group of men in the back of a convenience store in rural Jordan, chatting in Arabic, eating bread off the floor, and passing around a single spoon with which we ate the rice and beans).
(5) I can speak the language. Puedo hablar en la lengua. Je peux parler la langue. Posso parlare nella lingua. اتكلم اللغة

The first things people usually notice about me

People don't usually notice me at first. (But later they can't forget me ... so it works out.)

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Anything by Neal Stephenson. Currently I'm waiting breathlessly for the next book in the Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin.

TV: Mostly science fiction (Primeval is a current favorite).

Food: Anything challenging; lately I've been trying to find where they sell durians in Atlanta.

The six things I could never do without

(1) Learning of new things
(2) Discovery of new places
(3) Tasting of new cuisines
(4) Discussions with people I care about
(5) Intimacy with people I find attractive
(6) Work that I find fulfilling

I spend a lot of time thinking about

The world and my place in it.

On a typical Friday night I am

Eating with friends.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Two years in a row, my New Year's resolution was to watch more TV. (But, okay, I can explain: I find TV really relaxing, and it's the best time I have to snuggle up with my dogs. But I find it difficult to watch TV because I'm doing the things that people say you should give up TV for: learning stuff on the computer or getting together with friends or biking around the neighborhood.)

You should message me if

... any of the above looks interesting to you.
