My Notes edit

My self-summary

I am originally from New York, but have moved around the country a lot, also living in Boston, San Francisco, DC, Austin, and New Orleans. I moved to San Diego for graduate school, and I'm still working on that full-time. I like San Diego for its ethnic restaurants, coffeehouses, and weather, but the military presence and political conservativism are less my speed.

I like to get exercise every day if I can--run, work out, play softball, swim, and walk around. I love movies, books, and, yes, television. I especially like fictional stories in any medium. I'm generally fond of animals and am not allergic to any of them, unless of course you have a pet poison sumac.

A hypothesis of mine that has nothing to do with my PhD program is that pleasant weather inhibits the ability of Californians to understand sarcasm. I like to explore the outer edge of this phenomenon by wending progressively more obvious instances of sarcasm into my conversations: "It sure is tough to get used to this unpredictable San Diego weather." "Personally, I prefer food that doesn't taste good." "I enjoy disappointment."

What I'm doing with my life

I'm going after a PhD and maintaining the vague hope that it will enable me to do something interesting when I'm done.

I'm really good at

Drinking coffee, doing spontaneous impressions, using chopsticks, wordplay, vegetarian omelet production.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

My delivery can be a bit wry, so often what a person first notices is that I've said something that can't possibly be true.*

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Straight Man, Everything is Illuminated, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Motherless Brooklyn, A Confederacy of Dunces, Slaughterhouse Five, Barrel Fever, Fast Food Nation, Into Thin Air, The Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract.

Movies: Almost Famous, Midnight Run, The Usual Suspects, Breaking Away, Bullets Over Broadway, Twelve Monkeys, Rain Man, 28 Days Later, The Two Towers, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Tampopo, Cyrano de Bergerac, Delicatessen.

Music: Everything but modern country, especially music my friends who are into searching for music give me (indie, alternative, classic rock, folk, some hip-hop, etc.).

Food: Asian fusion, sushi, salmon, vegetable omelets, New York-style pizza, my best friend coffee, and chocolate.

Television: 30 Rock, Monk, The Office (I), The Office (II), House, Coupling, South Park, Family Guy, Medium, The Daily Show, The Colber Repor, and various incarnations of Law & Order.

The six things I could never do without

1. Ethnic food
2. Conversation with friends
3. Good fiction
4. Humor
5. Intellectual challenge
6. A meaningful vocation

6. Frequent exercise

6. Out-of-town trips

6. I can't believe I left out coffee!

I spend a lot of time thinking about

You. Constantly.

Creepy, huh? ;)

On a typical Friday night I am

Out to eat with friends, renting a movie, at a potluck, at a party, or just at home recovering from a busy week.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I live in La Jolla, which is in San Diego, but which OKCupid lists as 88 miles north of San Diego. So, I list myself in San Diego, or else all my closest matches will be 88 miles away.

I told them about the problem a long time ago, but the OKCupid people haven't bothered to fix it.

You should message me if

You're younger than me. You'd rather have good people in your life than lots of money, and it isn't even close.
