My Self-Summary
In the not too distant past, I used to live in Buffalo. Empty factories and 4 foot blizzards made me leave, so I bought a van and drove to San Francisco to make cartoons. The thing I miss most about Buffalo is the co-op house. There were 15 people living in a historic abandoned mansion that they saved from being knocked down for a parking lot. I didn't live there, but I joined as a boarder and took turns cooking for them. We had veggie feasts, bike rides and parties together. I loved drawing their flyers. Let me know if you know any places like that here.
Treasure hunting has been my love, living and curse at various times. I dig up old books and sell them as a self-employed dealer. Haven't found the Necronomicon yet, but I paid for college by collecting a house full of treasure with a giant office/studio/lair. I started the business while having adventures without money or a real place to live. It was hard work, but my little polish grandma says I can pinch a penny till it squeaks, and I have talents. I like to be surrounded by resources (walls of books, art supplies) and I like to make things too.
My other job is making animation and storyboards for TV shows, commercials and movies. Fun stuff like storyboarding scenes for Borat's sidekick. I once spent a year on a canadian farm (the cartoon commune), helping friends make a no budget TV show to try selling to a network. Right now I'm working freelance from my home studio (the art cave). A while back, I made an independent short to put in festivals. I'm making another one now and got a talented actress who does a famous commercial to lend her voice. Teaming up with people is cool.
Some of my past occupations included: puppy caretaker, children's arts-n-crafts helper/action figure target, computer teacher, stripper (wood and antiques, silly), robot repairman, creepy cryptkeeper, and some others that might make you do weird faces. I'm also treasurer for a company that 7 friends started so we can turn a warehouse into co-work space for artists, designers, coders etc.
My favorite people are ones who make a living and make the world better with wits and creativity. It's good to have a working class perspective, and express yourself through a passion for what you do. Basically, anyone who works hard doing something positive, has fun and tells interesting stories.
Editors
I’m really good at
writing embarassing things on the internet?
manufacturing guacamole from my sinuses (HOTT.)
Forgetting the name of anyone I meet within 5 seconds, but remembering every writer, artist or musician I have ever heard of anywhere ever.
Using magical hypnotic powers to achieve my will. Sadly they don't work on girls. They only work on squirrels, and I'm running out of places to keep all these nuts.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
I love movie history, 40's-50's noir, 60's-70's new hollywood, Aronofsky (the fountain and the wrestler only), Hitchcock, Herzog, John Sayles, John Waters, John Boorman, Cronenberg, Coen Brothers, criterion collection, Young Frankenstein, The Deer Hunter, Blade Runner, sci fi, zombies, shitty but cool DIY stuff, that porn from 1899 at the oddball film fest, 1940's tom & jerry cartoons with the parts they censored from TV, Idiocracy, Wall-E, the Iron Giant, Coraline, Anchorman, Grandma's boy, Rocky, Roadhouse, one time I got to hang out at John Kricfalusi's house, Once Upon a Time in the West, it's all a jumble of creative madness in my head!
Music: rock and new wave, Rolling Stones, Prince, Buzzcocks, Sisters of Mercy, Cocteau Twins, post-punk with the layers of shimmery guitars (the Chameleons), industrial noise (cabaret voltaire), gothic rock (bauhaus), shiny synth pop, street punk, heavy metal, KMFDM was my favorite in high school- still see their shows, love a hard working band- great lyrics (dylan, leonard cohen), lost classics, newer music like A Place to Bury Strangers, Cut Copy, Ulrich Schnauss, Jazz and soundtracks are good for drawing, NPR, Podcasts... I have probably listened to more of that than I've slept in life.
Food: fresh veggies, whole grains, and spicy sauces. Gallons of coffee. After the coffee keeps me up for 73 hours, braaaaains. Moving here made me start hunting down all kinds of exotic produce I never knew existed. It was a thrill to find forbidden mangosteen, lychee, longan, rambutan, cherimoya, durian, guava, nopales, sapote, pomegranate, starfruit, dragonfruit. Do you know where I can get some martian fizzberries?
