My Notes edit

My self-summary

I'm a life-long student in the middle of a two-year hiatus from my full-time studies (though I am taking a master's class in sociology and digital culture right now). I have a bachelor's in film studies and am currently figuring out what I want to do for my master's. I work as a projectionist and technical supervisor at Concordia University, which basically means I screen films for classes and set up audiovisual equipment. It's a fun job with potential to move up the ranks, but I plan to settle into something more creative after I go back to school.

Though the occasional 80's night can be fun, I'm not much on clubbing (referring to dance clubs, though I am also againt baby seal clubbing. I honestly don't know where baby seals pick up such violent behavior). I actually enjoy concerts and dancing, but I find the club scene far too crowded and noisy. I'd usually rather hang out at a brew-pub with friends, enjoy a nice meal, take a walk or a bike ride, or catch a show.

I am vegetarian and fairly health-conscious, but I don't force my views on anyone else. I like to stay physically fit, mostly through biking, but I have taken up rock climbing recently and it looks like I'll be sticking with it for at least a while to come. I like to keep interested in politics and the world around me. I read a lot and I also write when I have the time (which hasn't been much recently, but I'll be picking it back up soon). I find cooking to be relaxing, and I especially enjoy cooking for others.

I am an honest, loyal, intelligent, and open-minded individual, and these are the qualities I value most in the people around me. Balance is very important to me, though there's always room for a little craziness. I am confident and self-assured, sometimes to the point of being cocky, but I'm not a jerk about it. I used to be quite an unintentional know-it-all, but I swear I've gotten a lot better.

What I'm doing with my life

I am working at Concordia University as a film projectionist and technical supervisor while saving money for my post-grad studies.

I'm really good at

Anything I set my mind to, but here are some things I have set my mind to already:

Writing

Reading (I suppose everyone can read, but I actually enjoy it. Does this really count as something I'm really good at? Decide for yourself and stop asking me questions!)

Film analysis (I know, please try to hold your excitement in!)

Most brainy/nerdy things

Biking

Rock climbing (well, for a beginner)

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

I'm over 6'2'' tall so, for a lot of people, it's probably my belt buckle.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: The Catcher in the Rye, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 1984, Dune, It, Breakfast of Champions, The Andromeda Strain, Trinity (this is an auto-include, as one of my middle names comes from a character in Trinity), The Lord of the Rings, A Brief History of Time, Germinal, Frankenstein, Watership Down, the entire collection of Calvin & Hobbes.

Asking a film student about favorites is unfair, so I will try to give a few greats in different genres:

Horror - The Omen, Alien, Misery, The Shining, Ravenous

Romantic Comedy - Manhattan, When Harry Met Sally, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Edward Scissorhands, The Apartment

Action - The "Back to the Future" trilogy, The "Indiana Jones" trilogy, The "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, The "Star Wars" trilogy (the first one, in case there are any doubts), the entire James Bond series, The Hunt for Red October

Documentary - The Corporation, When We were Kings, American Splendor, Helvetica

Nerd Movies - Revenge of the Nerds (a nerd must-see)

Comedy - The Great Dictator, Modern Times, The General, Rushmore, The Big Lebowski, Trading Places, The Graduate, Best In Show, Beetlejuice, Grosse Pointe Blank, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, This is Spinal Tap, Dumb & Dumber (noone believes me 'til they see it, but it contains one of the most brilliant gags in history)

Drama - Barton Fink, Blue Velvet, No Country for Old Men, Casablanca, Almost Famous, Pan's Labyrinth, Blow-Up, There Will Be Blood, A Clockwork Orange, Do the Right Thing, The Piano, The Last King of Scotland, The Savages

Music: I suppose rock is the main thread of my musical taste from the fifties all the way to the present. I have a particular affinity for eighties music in general (Peter Gabriel, The Cure, The Talking Heads, The Police, Queen) and my cd collection is filled with mainstays like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Pixies, The Ramones, The Kinks, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, and Jimi Hendrix.

I stopped listening to the radio during the Latin craze, and thus I know less about current music than I'd like. The time I spend keeping up with film precludes me from keeping up with music so much, but some of my recent favorites are The Strokes, (though I've heard it's cool to hate them now, I never said I was cool) The White Stripes, Jamie Cullum, Rufus Wainwright, Feist and The Postal Service.

I most recently have been listening to "The Kinks are The Village Green Preservation Society" over and over again.

Food: Spinach pizza, tiramisu, and really good fruit.

The six things I could never do without

I'm going to assume necessities are taken care of already, and thus forego mentioning air, food, water, shelter, heat, light, and basic clothing (rest assured, they do outrate everything on the following list)

In no particular order:

1) Books 2) Music 3) Films 4) A computer (or pen and paper with an internet connection) 5) Toothbrush & toothpaste 6) A bike (boo city driving, boo!)

I've noticed that a lot people put their friends on this list. Your friends are not things! Do not treat them like objects (maybe sexual objects, but that's borderline at best).

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Whatever I'm reading, or watching, or is going on in the world at the time.

Also, women (to be honest).

On a typical Friday night I am

At a movie or a brew-pub with a couple of friends, or working.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

You mean I haven't divulged enough yet?! Damn this website's insatiable lust for personal tidbits!

I have a bit of a man-crush on both John Cusack and David Bowie. I'm straight and all, but who can honestly blame me? Only secretly-gay republicans who gay-hate to hide their own gayness (or is it gaiety? I think that only applies to the "happy" type of gay).

You should message me if

I like smart, strong, independant women. Heated discussions can be a lot of fun, so you're welcome to get in my face and tell me I'm wrong. I am not looking for anyone to complete me, as I am already complete (spare kidney and all). I would be very happy, however to find another complete person who fits well with me.
