When it comes to literature, I tend more towards plays: Long Day's
Journey Into Night, The Glass Menagerie, Death of a Salesman,
Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Tartuffe, Dr. Faustus, A
Raisin in the Sun, A Doll's House, and many more.
Some old favorites in more traditional reading (I can be a fantasy
dork) include Lord of the Rings, The Endurance, The Ender books,
Song of Fire and Ice books, lately anything by Neil Gaiman, Wheel
of Time. Patrick Rothfuss and Brandon Sanderson are a couple of
rising fantasy author stars that I admire. I love books on science
and history as well... A Brief History of Time, for instance.
MOVIES: Moonrise Kingdom, Cloud Atlas, Synecdoche, NY, There Will
be Blood, No Country for Old Men, Fight Club, The Road, Crash, Lord
of the Rings, Babel, The Lives of Others, Pan's Labyrinth, Good
Will Hunting, Hook, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, One Hour
Photo, Donnie Darko, Spiderman 2, Casablanca, Schindler's List,
Gladiator, Shawshank Redemption, The Dark Knight, The Fifth
Element, Adaptation, among others.
SHOWS: Breaking Bad has wowed me with it's acting, writing, and
directing. I'm currently getting caught up with House of Cards on
Netflix. Doctor Who and Walking Dead. Fringe was fun. I'm a sucker
for pretty much all the Start Trek series, though.
MUSIC: I love music, but it's difficult for me to define my taste
in words. I don't always gravitate towards a certain artist or
genre. I love to be taken away by music. I love music that has true
emotional depth and meaning.
Beethoven's 7th Symphony is a great example of what I might enjoy.
Put a pair of headphones on, and listen to it as loud as is
comfortable in a dark room with your eyes closed. Drown in it. Open
yourself completely to the sound and you'll find yourself inside
the music. I find beauty in the thought that the soul of Beethoven
(or any other creator of beautiful music) is immortalized within,
and while you listen, a little piece of his soul lives within you.
The more you can feel the soul of the artist, the better the music
is. Genre is irrelevant.
FOODS: I'm very open-minded about food. I love Thai, Indian,
Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Ethiopian. I will probably try almost
anything. French fries and cheesecake are guilty pleasures. I also
really enjoy cooking, especially for others.
With all of the above, I find I love intensity. Intense drama,
intense music, intense flavors.
