My self-summary
Update: at the end of May, I'm moving from NY to Portland, OR for a few months. I'm completely new to the city, so I'm relying on you Portlandians to come up with suggestions for things to do, see, eat, and drink.

I grew up in England and, after many years of gazing longingly from afar, moved to NY for grad school in 2007. I write about the history of psychiatry and philosophy and do my best to keep my students as entertained as possible.

Other than that, y'know, I'm a nice guy.
What I’m doing with my life
Teaching undergrads. Maintaining the fiction of writing my dissertation. Interviewing novelists.
I’m really good at
Laughing. Making sandwiches. Helping people buy clothes (if academia doesn't work out, I might have a career as a personal shopper). Grammar. Planning activities/holidays/general fun.
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm tall. People on here keep asking if I'm really 6' 3" - the answer is yes. Also, I'm English. I wear a lot of plaid and always have some kind of bag/satchel/over-the-shoulder-device with me.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
This list could go on interminably, so as succinctly as possible:

Haruki Murakami, Jennifer Egan, and Thomas Bernhard.
Vertigo, Do The Right Thing, and La Haine.
Arrested Development, Bored to Death, and Game of Thrones (not, as I'd initially feared, horribly misogynistic).
Elliott Smith, Low, and Sleater-Kinney.
Hamburgers, tacos, and sandwiches - that one's easy.
The six things I could never do without
Hamburgers
Email
Something to read
Friends
Winter sunshine
The BBC's online soccer commentary
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Which state to visit next. As a transplant from a small island, I really want to see as much of America as possible; so far I've been to 18 states and am visiting Alaska and possibly Montana this summer.

Anxiety (in a professional capacity).

Why I'm doomed to support sports teams that never, ever win anything.

Whether Portland will be as awesome as I've been led to believe.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
When I was six, my sister and I used to play a game in which I pretended to be an unruly orphan child named Ernest. She still calls me Ern to this day.

I don't know how to answer this. I'm pretty sure that any person really worth meeting would bring something new and unexpected into my life, so there's something rather self-defeating about producing a laundry list of demands here. But someone who likes and feels comfortable with who they are is probably a good start.
