My self-summary
I have not been able--nor do I like to--summarize myself; this poem by Don Blanding does a pretty decent job though:

"How very simple life would be
If only there were two of me
A Restless Me to drift and roam
A Quiet Me to stay at home.
A Searching One to find his fill
Of varied skies and newfound thrill
While sane and homely things are done
By the domestic Other One.

And that's just where the trouble lies;
There is a Restless Me that cries
For chancy risks and changing scene,
For arctic blue and tropic green,
For deserts with their mystic spell,
For lusty fun and raising Hell

But shackled to that Restless Me
My Other Self rebelliously
Resists the frantic urge to move.
It seeks the old familiar groove
That habits make. It finds content

With hearth and home dear prisonment,
With candlelight and well loved books
And treasured loot in dusty nooks,
With puttering and garden things
And dreaming while a cricket sings
And all the while the Restless One
Insists on more exciting fun
It wants to go with every tide,
No matter where… just for the ride.
Like yowling cats the two selves brawl
Until I have no peace at all.

One eye turns to the forward track,
The other eye looks sadly back,
I'm getting wall-eyed from the strain,
(It's tough to have an idle brain)
But One says "Stay" and One says "Go"
And One says "Yes," and One says "no,"
And One Self wants a home and wife
And One Self craves the drifter's life.

The Restless Fellow always wins
I wish my folks had made me twins."

-Don Blanding, The Double Life
What I’m doing with my life
I'm a writer, so the majority of my day is spent doing those things that inform my writing: reading, thinking, editing and revising. I also work as a research assistant at a university. On a daily basis, I drink a lot of coffee, take hikes, and subsequently nap with the dog. In my spare time, I play rugby (when I get the chance to boot up). Show me a rock and I will probably climb it; show me train tracks and I'll be on my way.
I’m really good at
Backing up a trailer.
The first things people usually notice about me
I recently asked some people this question and here are some of their responses:

"Your hair, your laugh, and your 72oz coffee mug." - good friend from my stint in AmeriCorps *NCCC

"Our first day in NCCC, you showed up earlier than the rest of the corpsmembers. By the time I showed up, you already had your crisp dress uniform on and were helping the team leaders check folks in. You seemed very enthusiastic and professional and I was glad you were my roommate. Most of that changed, mind you, within a few hours."

"Something about your eyes conveys enthusiasm. Wide eyed ideas and naked rampages.." - friend

"Your genuine curiosity about things and adventurous spirit." -one of my pen pals

"Well, that would have to be the naked lower half of your body as you came down the stairs singing Cajun Christmas songs." - a good friend and wife of one of my best friends

"I've been actively trying to forget every "impression" you've ever made upon me." -good friend and rugby brother

The six things I could never do without
1. My loved ones
2. My dog
3. Coffee
4. Books
5. A philosophical framework
6. Adventure
I spend a lot of time thinking about
my next story. And about what I'm reading. I spend a fair amount of time considering bouldering problems, and where to find a good coffee place in DC or the Maryland suburbs, or how I'm going to finance my next trip.
On a typical Friday night I am
These days, reading on the couch.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have a guilty pleasure for Kevin Costner movies. Also, sometimes I just go to your profile to get new music recommendations.
I’m looking for
  • Everybody
  • Ages 18–99
  • Near me
  • For new friends, short-term dating, activity partners, long-distance penpals
You should message me if
You would like to go for a walk or a hike--walking through, in, and around DC, at all hours, is perhaps what I love best about it. I'm also looking for people with whom to rock climb and hop trains. Send me a message--especially if you are local. Platonic references (both male and female) available upon request. *I love getting messages from people.*
