I am seeking a mate, and my best friend, and progressing slowly.
My Self-Summary
I am comfortable where I am. I no longer feel impelled to grab for
the brass ring. I yearn to leave the legacy of an improved world. I
am a work-in-progress with a large lifetime todo list. I am seeking
my best friend, she who'll help me to be the very best I can, as I
will gladly do for her. I hope to share in the occasional madcap
adventure, but usually to amble through life taking time to tend
our myriad 'gardens', to cultivate a wonderment for trivialities,
to appreciate each other's companionship and to ponder silly
scenarios such as what our lives would be like if gravity's effect
was suddenly reduced by 25%. Life is too short for me to continue
on the sidelines, running this race solo.
According to the Wilson personality profile, I am an 'Amiable
Analytic'. I tend to over-analyze. I am not especially
confrontational. I am a good mediator, empathetic and articulate. I
drive a Honda Fit. My youngest child is almost 16 -- all three were
primarily
homeschooled in Worcester.
I don't care much for sports (last time I was fan was for 1973-1977
Mets). I have no interest in going to bars. If television, tabloids
and other big media are *the* major influencers in your life,
please hit Next. Ditto for heavy emphasis on Tarot, magnets,
crystals, ESP or tinfoil hats. Dressing to the nines, with high
heels and makeup doesn't do much for me. I don't use facebook,
twitter or texting. I am not enamored of electronic gadgets. I am
not a 'teddy bear', though I can certainly be affectionately
disposed.
Despite all the specificity in this profile, I am pretty much
nonjudgmental and accommodating. I am willing to revise my opinions
and my preferences based on my experiences or a well-organized and
logical argument. I have no illusions of being a knowitall, don't
care much how I might rank on a scale of one-to-ten and aim to be
the best person I can be for myself and those I hold dear. I am
cautiously adventurous, though often needing a little well-timed
prompting to get off the mark.
I sometimes speak what is on my mind directly, but usually I am
artfully indirect and heavily employ ethos, logos and pathos to
gently sway or effect change or influence. Many of my interactions
are couched with a pretext of
dry humor I do hope that I
occasionally provide a welcome chuckle as well as food for thought
during my machinations. I don't like being scolded or berated
though I am developing a tougher skin to such. I am imperfect and
don't expect perfection in others -- candor, honesty, intent and
trust are much more important to me.
What I’m doing with my life
I am into
gardening and home-based enterprises.
I enjoy long walks (woods or sidewalks). I find I am more
politically engaged than the average person and am getting
frustrated with a government that is tinged with vested interests
and a populace that can no longer seem to have sensible discourse.
I'd like to have more time for invention, based on practical need
not bolstering my wallet. I am an advocate for lifetime learning. I
have a penchant for
genealogy and similar investigative
research. I am gaining an interest in alternative food motifs (ie,
I have soaked acorns to leach the tannins as an experiment, though
not with a pleasant result) that are locally grown. I approve of
Obama. I would like to design and build my own hyper-efficient
house; I lean toward a yurt but am too practical to push it as a
primary residence.
I’m really good at
Getting a job done, with high quality, once started on the task. I
am also very good at returning borrowed library materials on time.
I am a safe driver -- no accidents or tickets in >500,000 miles.
The first things people usually notice about me
Gray hair, glasses, youthful innocence, non-linear thinking,
engaging warmth in conversation, questionable fashion sense.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Books: historical fiction (M. Didius Falco series by Lindsay Davis
is a prime example), Lord of the Rings, looking forward to digging
into the enduring classics when time permits (Chaucer, Dante, etc).
I liked Harry Potter, but that probably had more to do with sharing
the experience with my children when they were young.
Movies: I think Lord of the Rings was one of the best film
adaptions I have ever seen. I am moderatedly enthused by the
occasional testosterone-packed movie with an impossibly implausible
plot (like the Bourne series, Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon), or
adventure (Indiana Jones), and sometimes Science Fiction
(Waterworld) or Dystopian (Matrix). I'd have to eliminate most
movies from the 70's. Movies that I offhand remember enjoying
include Shaolin Soccer, The Gods Must Be Crazy (I & II),
Fahrenheit 9/11, Amelie, Run Lola Run. Documentaries are fine, so
is PBS.
Music: Artists who write their own music have a stronger appeal --
Indigo Girls, Dixie Chicks, Dar Williams for example. Music has not
held a strong draw for me, but mostly a pleasant background. I have
an idle iPod for the last few months since I am not interested in
listening that intently. I don't like Bob Dylan for an inexplicable
reason. I would prefer to listen to 'alternative' stations than
from artists that are highly produced and compensated. Ethnic music
sung in the native tongue is appealing. I don't have dancing
coordination; I have yet to find a rhythm, or partner, that brings
it all together for me.
Food: I like healthful foods (say from Trader Joes). I like kiwis
and seedless grapes and smoked Gouda cheese and tabbouleh. I like
homemade pizza or fresh made bread. I have recently dropped fleshy
meat products from my diet (as one-too-many exposés on food
production suddenly dissipated my appetite for it). I am working
harder to avoid genetically modified foods too. Cooking for
enjoyment, not practicality, is on my radar.
The six things I could never do without
would be among the 26 letters of the US alphabet, though according
to Mark Twain if we all agreed we could eliminate a few of the
confusing ones and that would be OK. I am not much in favor of
using categorical phrases like 'never' -- I am adaptable and
consider that a virtue. In fact, when I find things that I 'could
never do without' I tend to think long and hard about them and find
a way to break the dependency of such an addiction.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
the future, the present and the past (in that order -- I tend to
read articles starting from the back also, for some odd reason). I
have ideas for inventions, where I want to be in the next few
years, personal improvements I'd like to undertake. I keep my ideas
in notebooks as I have found my memory is not nearly so reliable as
in decades past.
On a typical Friday night I am
not dating, unfortunately.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
Every bluetooth earpiece I have ever tried has always mounted 180
degrees opposite to the picture shown. This has me wondering if my
ear canals are defective or whether 'left-handed ears' are an
under-served consumer market.
You should message me if
our interests mesh, you live relatively near by, you aren't in a
serious relationship currently, and you don't smoke, OR, you
similarly enjoy cultivating e-friendships with interesting folks.
