I am silly, serious, and paradoxical.
My Self-Summary
I'm a left-handed Florida native who never goes to the beach. I
like to read. I prefer quality over quantity, function over form
and am quiet until I have something to say.
I have two
cats (Pan
and Loki) which provide constant amusement and affection (when it's
time to be fed). They are the latest in a long line of cats all of
whom have been named after literary, legendary or mythological
people.
I like to go
camping and
canoeing (as long as it's with the
current). I think I've canoed on every major Florida river,
especially the ones with rope swings.
One of my annual rituals is watching the Perseid and Orionid meteor
showers, mosquitoes permitting.
I love to travel. I lived in Switzerland for two years, spent some
time in Saudi Arabia and have travelled in Italy, Austria, Germany,
Greece, England and Wales.
There's more, but that's enough to start with.
What I’m doing with my life
I maintain an even strain.
I've been a bookseller part time for ten years (gotta finance my
reading addiction
somehow!) and am also working for an office supply company
utilizing my remarkable organizational skills and passion for
detail.
I’m really good at
lots of different things; here are some of them:
sewing, pastry baking, creating medieval costumes, calligraphy,
graphology, gardening, cake decorating,
Dungeon Mastering, flower
arranging and
cat
taming. I'm also a fount of useless trivia, having written and
run games for an internet chat room for several years. If you ever
want the names of the first 4 groups of astronauts along with the
names of their spacecraft listed in order of their flights, I'm the
one you want.
I also memorized Lewis Carroll's poem "
Jabberwocky" after having read it
once and can trot it out given little or no provocation.
The first things people usually notice about me
is my hair; it's really curly and beyond redemption.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
I always need something to read (backs of cereal boxes, company
bulletin boards, whatever). My favourite books are The Chronicles
of Amber by
Roger Zelazny, The Dark Tower by
Stephen King,
American Gods by
Neil Gaiman,
Isaac Asimov's autobiographies and
The Complete
Far
Side Collection by Gary Larson. I also love the
Harry Potter books and
have a large collection of books by or about astronauts/
NASA (the best ones are
Carrying the Fire by Michael Collins, and Riding Rockets by Mike
Mullane).
Favourite filmmakers are Tim Burton, Mel Brooks, Quentin Tarantino,
Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones.
I like period dramas and Star Trek, also.
My taste in music ranges from Aerosmith to Frank Zappa and just
about anything in between. Putting my iPod on random just now, the
first 5 songs that appeared in the playlist are by Weird Al
Yankovic, Dave Matthews, Sibelius, Kamelot, and Linkin Park.
If awaiting execution, my last meal would be a rare filet mignon
smothered in sauteed mushrooms, a baked potato smothered in
cheddar, bacon, sour cream and chives, and mint chocolate chip ice
cream smothered in toasted almonds and hot sauce.
But I don't have a suffocation fetish. Really.
The six things I could never do without
A book to read, a pot of coffee and a pack of cigarettes is about
all it takes to maintain my equilibrium throughout the day. I also
never leave the house without a pack of cards and a set of dice.
Oh, and my glasses, without which I am not licensed to operate any
heavy machinery.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings, of why the
sea is boiling hot, and whether pigs have wings.
Truthfully, I have a fairly short attention span unless something
really catches my interest fully. The trouble is, I think many
things are interesting which leads to an immense complicated
convoluted train of thought at any given moment.
On a typical Friday night I am
probably at home with a book unless my musician buddies are playing
locally; then I'll be rocking out with them and collecting broken
guitar strings.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
is probably nowhere nearly as weird as what you're thinking. Guess
and I'll tell you if you're right.
You should message me if
you have a great book to recommend, want to try out a local coffee
shop or get snookered playing pool.
I am rabid about correct spelling and punctuation (discounting the
occasional typo); if you can't be bothered to spell out what you
want to say, you probably don't want to invest the time to get to
know me.
I don't respond well to IMs because I cannot lie quickly under
pressure.
