I am curious, funny, and intelligent.

My Self-Summary

Actually, I completed ALL the essays and TONs of questions, and then Poof! Gone!
And the goofy hair thing in the picture is because of the wind, but I don't have many pictures of myself without other people.
I really DO NOT like doing the same thing twice, like writing essays.
I am getting my Master's in Social Work at UT, so I spend a lot of time studying, but I am tired of being too old to hang with the other students and too much of a student to be able to hang with the profs.
I'm not the party girl type, but like to go out to do interesting things and explore new activities, too. I love to dance (ballroom, SCD, etc), but am not crazy about nightclubs or really loud places.
I have learned that I would rather do something I'm not crazy about with people I love than do something I adore alone, but at the same time, I'm not afraid to get out there on my own, be it to a concert or movie or on a solo hiking trip in Scotland. (I LOVE to travel)
I just bought a loft that I LOVE, much to my surprise because I always thought I would end up in a white-picket-fence house. I bought my first two pieces of art that weren't gifts or inheritances this summer, too: a photo from my Northern Ireland trip (ask me about it, I love to talk about it), and a haunting self-portrait by a fellow I've watched grow up with my son since their childhood.
I really have no idea what I'm supposed to say, and I'm afraid I'm going to use some kind of "dating site code" adjective and you'll think I'm a biker chick from Bakersfield who gets it on with turtles while eating potato chips.
I'm not. Really. Not that there's anything wrong with it...
oh hell.

What I’m doing with my life

Revising, reconstructing, reorganizing it. Studying. Wondering what's next.

I’m really good at

soothing...
listening
creative thinking
over-thinking
exploring
other stuff I'm still figuring out myself

The first things people usually notice about me

I see nobody else knows how to answer this either...
How about you write mine and I'll write yours?

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books I've read recently that I've enjoyed:
M. Chabon: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay
D. Hammett: The Thin Man
N. Flynn: Another Bullshit Night in Suck City
W. Ayers: A Kind and Just Parent
and currently C. Klosterman: Killing Yourself to Live
Often my favorite books have been recommended by my 19-year-old son.
Last night we saw Funny People. Pretty raunchy, pretty funny in spots, sad, squirm-producing and waaaaaaay too long.
Ever seen Brick?
My musical tastes are eclectic. I don't like jazz, except Dixieland, or New Orleans. Love John Phillip Sousa and Johann Strauss and Mozart, and the old hippies (James Taylor, Joan Baez...), and rhythm and blues and Brett Dennen and Scottish/Irish music and strange things my son plays, too (Buckethead!!). I love the variety of ACL Fest!
Food--not organ meat, yet I actually like Haggis. Not too fat, but I love melted cheese. Anything fresh and organic and simple. Steak. Light fresh seafood. Hate canned tuna, though. Good old PB&J is good sometimes. I love molasses and maple syrup. Left to my own devices, I eat a lot of eggs and grains and soup and salad. I like to cook together, but hate being in the kitchen alone.

The six things I could never do without

good, clean water
staying in touch with nature
a best friend
a safe place, nest, home, or armchair of my own
Intellectual and creative stimulation
my journal (and a pen)

I spend a lot of time thinking about

remaking myself, becoming more conscious, schoolwork, improving the world for others, building my own future

On a typical Friday night I am

studying, watching tv, on the computer, reading, or going out to a movie or other event. But I'm definitely up for suggestions.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Another stumper....
Je ne parle pas tres bien en francais, mais je veux l'apprendre. (And I don't know how to make accent marks!)
