I am smart, sweet, and geeky.

My Self-Summary

I would describe myself as an American Mr. Darcy (although by blood, I am half British). I'm reserved, sometimes awkward, but I can also be very sweet and charming once you get past my quiet exterior.

I think that a generally positive mindset is more important than sharing specific interests (i.e., I'd rather date someone who has none of my interests but respects them all, than has half of my interests and thinks the other half are stupid). If you'd like to know more about my interests, talk to me or read on.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm a psychology graduate student right now. I don't shrink heads. I do research. I'm getting close to the dissertation right now. My life involves running a lab and supervising a bunch of awesome research assistants. I'm also kept busy with teaching and writing. Pretty soon I will be a professor. Cool, eh?

I really love teaching statistics, which is funny because for most of my life I thought I was terrible at math and the furthest thing from a math nerd. Just don't ask me to tell you my statistics jokes that I tell my class... they're really dumb. :)

I’m really good at

A.) Giving really, really good backrubs. Like anything valuable, I don't just hand them out... but when I do, they are mind-blowing. ;)

B.) I'm a damn good kisser too... (What? Don't believe me? Try and prove me wrong). ;)

C.) Other than that, I'm a good writer I guess. Poetry mostly with the occasional play and short story. I don't have much time for writing fun stuff though. I write journal articles too (10 publications and counting)--but I doubt you'd want to read those. If you do though, I'll totally hook you up. :)

(speaking of hooking up, see points A and B). ;)

D.) I make random origami that I leave random places.

E.) I have bunches of other hobbies (as graduate school time permits) and am always interested in trying new activities.

F.) I like making lists in my OKCupid profile. :)

The first things people usually notice about me

That I'm quiet in large groups. Some people say I have really nice eyes (they are blue).

I'm not quite sure what else. I'm not other people. :)

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

These are a representative sample, I'm probably forgetting quite a few.

BOOKS:

I read stuff for school mostly, but I've been on quite the audiobook kick recently. Anything by Tolkien, Rowling, Card, and Gaiman automatically goes to the top of my list.

Some of my favorites... The Lord of the Rings -- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion -- J.R.R. Tolkien, Neverwhere -- Neil Gaiman, American Gods -- Neil Gaiman, Anansi Boys -- Neil Gaiman, Contact -- Carl Sagan, Harry Potter series -- J.K. Rowling, Ender's Game series -- Orson Scott Card, Mythago Wood -- Robert Holdstock, The Book of Kells -- R.A. MacAvoy

MOVIES:

The Shawshank Redemption, The Lord of the Rings (all three), Stardust, The Wedding Singer, Win A Date With Tad Hamilton, Contact, The Cooler, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (some of the others are good too), Unbreakable, The 5th Element, The Indiana Jones Movies, The Mummy Movies, The 40-year-old Virgin.

MUSIC:

A Fine Frenzy, Norah Jones, Paul Simon (and I guess that bum Garfunkel too), No Doubt (and by extention Gwen Stefani's solo career), The Monkees, Kelly Clarkson, Rufus Wainwright, Sheryl Crow, Semisonic, Coldplay...

Again, this is just a taste of my musical preferences. I like almost everything. There is the odd musician or genre here and there that grates on my nerves, but mostly I like it all.

I love good female vocalists. So yeah, if you can sing, that's a definite plus, but by no means a requirement or an expectation.

FOODS:

I'm a burger, fries and pizza kind of guy.

The six things I could never do without

A.) My family
B.) My friends
C.) My laptop
D.) Science
E.) Paper (for writing, origami, or some other purpose)
F.) Satire

I spend a lot of time thinking about

A.) How I'm going to make it through graduate school

B.) Science and the future of humanity

C.) Entropy and ways to reverse it

----------------------

Below is half of a poem I wrote. If you want to read the other half, send me a message. See how I'm tricky like that? :)

Anyways, it's as good a summation of my personality as anything I've written. It's too bad I couldn't make it easier to read. OKCupid! likes removing line breaks at inopportune locations.

UFO

I.

I sit in the dawn and I see it,/Humming before me./Like some giant bee it floats there/Waiting.//Maybe for some word from the pale blue sky,/Maybe for some sign, I don't know.//It sits in the air and I watch it/Gliding effortlessly/Like it was some genie,/Conjured up from a magic lamp./But it's real.//The daze passes and I pick up my sandwich;/Why I don't know./Maybe they'd like a sandwich,/Maybe it'd kill them,/...Both possible reasons to give them the sandwich.//I take a bite./The ham and cheese slides down my throat,/Good stuff.//The giant bee settles on the grass./Damn I wish I had a camera...//Without thinking I grab a round smooth stone./A Lucky stone...//I chuck it through the quiet air,/And it sails,/Arcing...//Towards the ship!/I panic,/"They could kill me!" I think.//The stone hits the ship./Thunk!//KABOOM!!!//The ship explodes...//"Damn" I think again,/And I have another bite of my sandwich.//

On a typical Friday night I am

Doing some form of school work usually. **Sigh**

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

More weird poems:

Flappity, floppity, flip,
The mouse on the Möbius Strip.
The strip revolved
The mouse dissolved
In a chronodimensional skip.

You should message me if

I was told by a friend that my 40-point checklist in this section was too long. :)

Here is my new criterion for messaging me:

Send me a message.

I may respond, I may not.

Therein lies the adventure. :)
