My Notes edit

My self-summary

Here are some things that make me happy, which I guess says something about me: my friends, my dog, watching a movie in an empty theatre, wickedly strong coffee with vanilla soy milk, a good long brood, books that make me cry or laugh out loud, taking two hours to cook a great meal while enjoying cold beer or good red wine, live music in a dive bar, Scarlett Johansson in her undies in the beginning of Lost in Translation, the election, rolling pins, writing a good story, conversations that last until 4am, and PEOPLE WHO MAKE ME LAUGH.

What I'm doing with my life

Trying to overcome crippling writer's block....Currently working with teens and telling myself I'm saving the world (this is a job that suits me, as I tend to share similar recreational taste with 14 year-old boys...i.e. checking out the new X-Men movie, playing laser tag and video games, and pondering how cool it would be if FEMA could be replaced by the Justice League.)

I'm really good at

Conflict resolution...loyalty (this is something of a thing with me)...embracing my inner (and outer) dork...cooking (my specialties are spaghetti, Thanksgiving dinner, and a variety of breakfasts)...losing track of time...balancing my tendency to be both complaisant and complacent... being totally shy until I get to know someone and then never shutting up...answering utterly useless trivia questions...seeing humor in the most absurd and surreal situations, and laughing at the most inappropriate times.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

Possibly my green eyes or maybe my complete lack of fashion sense. I really have no idea, as I am a writer and major observer, so I typically am thinking more about my impression of others than theirs of me. However, I'm now very curious; I will have to poll those in the know pronto.

Best answer from my poll..."I thought maybe you were autistic."

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Nine Stories (In particular, A Perfect Day for Bananafish), A Prayer for Owen Meany, Me Talk Pretty One Day, As I Lay Dying, Running with Scissors, Wuthering Heights, No Exit, Written on the Body, A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters, Geek Love, Cat's Cradle, The Basketball Diaries, The People's History of the United States, most anything Bukowski wrote, and way too many things to list.
Movies & TV: The Royal Tennenbaums, Fight Club, The Hotel New Hampshire, American Beauty, Bound, The Secretary, The Princess Bride, Star Wars (the original trilogy), Near Dark, Harold and Maude, Lost in Translation, Say Anything, A Fish Called Wanda, Flash Gordon, Shawn of the Dead, Rushmore, The Big Lebowski, several John Hughes films, Dawn of The Dead, Requium for a Dream, Closer, The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and many more. TV: Buffy, Doctor Who, Weeds, Pushing Daisies, Dexter, Wonderfalls, the Office, Xena, Arrested Development, Firefly, No Reservations, Battlestar Galactica, and several others depeding on my mood.
Music: Modest Mouse, Tori Amos, Nirvana, the Ramones, Bob Dylan, Bright Eyes, The Pixies, The Mountain Goats, Dave Douglas, Lou Reed, The White Stripes, Nina Simone, Johnny Cash, Ryan Adams, Elvis Costello, Roxy Music, Billie Holiday, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, The Replacements, Thelonious Monk, and oh so many more.
Food: N.Y. Pizza, sushi, oysters, holiday feasts, spicy thai & indian, peaches, dim sum, cereal, very special chicken tacos, good coffee, chocolate and cheese, home-made soups, and french bread.

The six things I could never do without

In some particular order:

The people I love most
A comfy bed
Intellectual Stimulation
Music
Good Food
My Sense of Humor

I spend a lot of time thinking about

My navel, my dog's tail, my existential crisis of the moment, world peace, songs I wish I wrote (Death Cab for Cutie's "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" just kills me), clowns, becoming an ex-patriate, swimming in the ocean again, and, lately, cheeseburgers.

On a typical Friday night I am

Spending time with people I care about, either seeing a movie or band or just hanging out at home cooking dinner and watching a video or listening to music and, if I have had a few beers, talking excessively about whatever is racing through my brain....

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I have an irrational fear (or maybe it's not) of all clowns. I once encountered a drunken clown coming down the sidewalk towards me in the French Quarter and I was nearly struck by a taxi as I ran screaming across the street to avoid him. My then girlfriend peed herself laughing.

Also...I will never eat the last cookie.
