My Self-Summary

I just wrote a totally awesome self-summary and then accidentally hit the "back" button on my web-browser, so if there's anything you were hoping I'd say that isn't here, it was in that version that I just accidentally deleted. Honest!

I'm a creative guy with a geeky streak. I found my way into the movie industry and don't plan to leave any time soon. I enjoy meeting anyone with a drive to express himself - be it photography, painting, or underwater basket weaving. I like running to keep in shape. Jogging around new streets is also a great way to learn the City and combat my awful, awful sense of direction. It's mostly a losing battle, though.

I have a great group of friends that I wouldn't trade for anything but I'm still looking for a special someone. If you think it might be you, definitely drop me a line!

What I’m doing with my life

I work in the special effects industry, which I find to be a nice mix of technical skill and creative challenges. I spent all day yesterday lighting space ships, so I really can't complain.

In my free time, I try to write. I'm finishing up on my first feature length screenplay (complete with climactic scene where the protagonist comes out to his talking refrigerator). I've been on a bit of a zombie kick recently (I mean really, who hasn't?) in playing zombie video games, reading zomie comic books, and writing a one-act about zombies.

I’m really good at

I'm really good at referring to books, TV shows, and musicals that my friends have never heard of. Given enough time, I can tie any life experience to a song from a Broadway musical - usually one by Stephen Sondheim.

The first things people usually notice about me

People usually notice that I'm obsessed with pop culture (in fact, you'll probably notice that from my answers here). I'm quick to laugh and can keep a good conversation going because I'm genuinely interested in what people have to say.

People who meet me online tend to notice that I like parentheses and dashes.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

My favorite authors or Kurt Vonnegut, Haruki Murakami, and David Sedaris. My favorite book is probably Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I love any writer who can pack emotion into a story that flirts with the line between fantasy and reality.

Oh, and I also just started reading the poetry of Mark Doty and really enjoy it.

I'm a sucker for a musical and my favorite movie of all time is Singin' in the Rain. I'm also a big fan of The Truman Show, Spirited Away, Ed Wood, and Sweeney Todd. Musicals feature big in my music playlist as well, though I also like They Might Be Giants, Green Day, and Weezer.

I'm pretty eclectic in food choices, but the Japanese-American in me feels compelled to say "sushi"

The six things I could never do without

iPod,
my journal,
something interesting to write about,
theater,
Wikipedia,
friends (is it bad to refer to them as "things"? I hope they don't mind...)

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Art. I mean that broadly - everything from Tintin comics to David Copperfield (both the book and the magician) to High School Musical 3. I'm constantly looking for works that speak to me and love exploring pieces I've never experienced.

Particularly as a gay man, I feel art is the key to changing our place in society. I spend a lot of time thinking about how we're represented, how we should be represented, and what I can do to be a part of that.

On a typical Friday night I am

Going to a movie with a group of friends, or maybe on a particularly special Friday going to see some live theater. I can have a lot of fun at a club or a bar if it's with the right group of people. If it's been a rough week at work, sometimes there's nothing better then curling up on the couch with a beer and a book, DVD, or video game.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm named after Star Trek. Yep.

You should message me if

I'm really pretty open to talking to just about anyone, so feel free to message me if you have anything interesting to say. If you're a nice, genuine guy looking for about the same, then all the better. :)
