My Notes edit

My self-summary

I'm a person with strong nerd tendencies heading into his 30s. I love Halifax and Canada in general (though admittedly the Maritimes and Newfoundland will always be more important to me than Upper Canada or the West). I'm fairly laid back most of the time, although I love a good argument from time to time, especially if the other person is really into it too. I'm agnostic by nature and while I will always accept a scientific explanation over a religious one, I don't quite feel comfortable making absolute statements about things that are inherently unknowable and cannot be properly tested. If that's confusing, feel free to ask me to explain it better.

My interests are books, RPGs, computers (can you tell I'm a geek?) and the like, as well as my cottage, trips through the park/woods, and on rare occasions an old fashioned fishing trip is a great way to escape. I dislike sports and forceful religious beliefs (religion is fine, just don't shove it in my face). I'm also a big fan of science and space exploration, and I have some fairly strong views on environmental issues and political process, though I'm by no means an activist.

What I'm doing with my life

I'm presently working for a local R&D (and production) firm, in the Special Projects division of our IT department, primarily focused on application development and support for internal clients. I was a software developer for a local advertising and communications company up until the end of 2005, and I've been involved in the local IT industry since 1995, when I helped a few friends start and successfully manage the second ISP in Nova Scotia all the way through to the corporate buyout phase. If you're still awake and reading, I promise I don't actually talk about work that often. It's just what I do for a living.

I spend most of my free time socializing with friends, reading, and writing when I find myself with both the impetus and the time - and by writing I mean both the literary and software senses. I have a strong desire to understand the basic underlying science of reality, and that takes me to some interesting places (more mentally than physically, unfortunately) in my studies. My major aspirations are to eventually write something worth publishing, but I have no illusions of ever being able to give up my real job for writing. It's mostly just something I do for fun, and for myself. I don't expect to ever support myself by writing, and I'm not about to quit my day job to find out if I could.

I try to make sure there's enough time in my schedule to get out of the city center and into the green belt fairly regularly too, although time has been in shorter supply this year for various reasons.

I'm really good at

Remembering everything except whatever happens to be important for me to remember at any given moment. My brain holds a ridiculous amount of trivia on far too many topics, none of which ever seems to surface at a relevant time.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

Other than the beard?

I'm weird, and I have an opinion on just about everything, and the things I don't I want to know more about so I can form an opinion. The most important thing is that opinions can change; a closed mind is a frightening thing.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Last and First Men by Olaf Stapledon, Otherland (series) by Tad Williams, The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin, Foundation (series) by Isaac Asimov, A Song of Ice and Fire (series) by George R. R. Martin... any intelligently written science fiction or fantasy to be honest.

Movies: No real favorites, but I do enjoy Lord of the Rings, Remains of the Day, The Big Lebowski, Fearless... again, I'll watch most Sci-Fi movies, or anything with certain actors in it. I do like to nitpick though.

Music: I listen to just about everything, although if I had to pick a favorite group it'd be Pink Floyd, followed by an assortment such as The Mountain Goats, The Decemberists, The Offspring... Jonathan Coulton... others.

Foods: I like pretty much anything, although I'm partial to traditional bachelor fare such as pizza. This is mostly just due to me tending to not have the desire to cook for myself at the end of a day at work.

The six things I could never do without

Books, my cat, my friends, my cottage, good food and music? I don't know, there's probably several thousand things that would make life unpleasant to live without over an extended period, but at the same time I try not to worry too much about possessions.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

My mind is chaos. I think about everything, all the time, in 0.5 second cycles. That being said, the things that tend to pop to the top more often than others fall into a few different categories: scientific (space exploration and the inherent problems involved, biology, evolution, medical research), politics (foreign policy, environmental protection and economic growth, social reforms, corporate governance), personal (relationships, marriage, children, losing and gaining friends), and ... well, and a lot more but that's all I can knock out right now.

On a typical Friday night I am

Either reading, watching TV, feeding my online addiction, or on rare occasions out with friends for food and maybe a show.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I can move cats through sheer force of will.

You should message me if

You want to, for whatever reason. I'm approachable, if sometimes a bit odd.
