I am funny, honest, and tenacious.

My Self-Summary

Hi, my name is Lauren.

I was born and raised in San Francisco (yes, in the city) and moved down to San Diego in September 2006 to attend UC San Diego.
I am a very curious person and this characteristic manifests itself in all aspects of my life. I am usually not shy to ask a question flat out. As a result people will reveal something to me they may have only told their closest friend or family member. When that happens I usually feel honored that someone is comfortable enough with me to make such a confession.

I was curious about martial arts. I took a brazilian jiu jitsu class on campus a few months ago and loved it. I have been moderately training ever since (about twice a week). I also like to swim and do indoor rock climbing.

To those I love, I give the most. I am fortunate to have some really wonderful and close friends here in San Diego. I live with two of these friends and I am so grateful for that. One of my roommates and I are planning on going skydiving!

I love trying new foods too. I get excited about new dishes to make or finding a new restaurant. I love sushi and I recently discovered hot pot.

I am also curious about new places. I enjoy traveling, whether it be close (like within California) or far (to China). When I was younger, I went on a twelve week road trip with my mom across the United States and back.

What I’m doing with my life

I am a fourth year UCSD student studying Math, with an emphasis in probability and statistics. As much as I like my major, I tend to compartmentalize this part of my life. So it would be unusual to hear me chatting away about math during social situations.

I work for a professor on campus doing statistical analysis.

I plan to graduate in June 2010. As to what I will do when I graduate, who knows? There are just so many options that it is too soon to decide. I will see where this year takes me and go from there.

I’m really good at

*forming close and meaningful connections
*swimming
*math
*cooking
*laughing (I love stand up!)

The first things people usually notice about me

My green eyes. I get a lot of complements on them, but the most memorable was when a stranger said to me, "your eyes are comforting." This was different because what they said implied that my eyes comfort others. How awesome would that be! Saying "they're pretty" is nice, but that does not really imply a change in feeling-like they do not actually make someone feel different, better even.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I love watching movies! Here is a list:

Election, Birth, Rushmore, City of God, American Beauty, Freeway, Traffic, Requiem for a Dream, Legends of the Fall, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, In the Bedroom, The Squid and the Whale, The Sweet Hereafter, The Constant Gardener, 25th Hour, A Walk on the Moon, Pulp Fiction, Closer, Donnie Darko, A Fish Called Wanda, The English Patient, The New World, The Way We Were, Breaking the Waves, The Departed, The Wicker Man, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Leaving Las Vegas, Being John Malkovich, Hannah And Her Sisters, Annie Hall, Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood

I know that is a lot, but I like a lot of movies....

Some of my favorite books include Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Harry Potter, Kite Runner, Yellow Raft on Blue Water, Brave New World. I am in the midst of reading A Thousand Splendid Sons.

Music: Tori Amos, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Joni Mitchell, She Wants Revenge, The Lovemakers, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Damien Rice, Pinback, Bjork, Postal Service, Radiohead

Food: I love all sorts of different foods like Indian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese (mmmm sushi), Thai, Greek, Cuban, Delis,...

The six things I could never do without

*friends
*family
*movies
*my computer
*tea
*home cooked meals

I spend a lot of time thinking about

what makes me happy and if my current life, my plans, and the paths I am on are all in sync with what I believe fulfills me. I still haven't found the answer, but I get closer each and every day. It is interesting to see how sometimes a path I am on does not lead to something that I find interesting, fulfilling, or rewarding at all. And I ask myself, why am I doing this thing if it is not really what I want?

On a typical Friday night I am

socializing with my friends. The location is usually the main variable (a party, my house or my friends, a restaurant, dive bar,...)

You should message me if

you want to get to know me better.
