Books: I read a fair bit of non-fiction, but devoured a few novels
this summer. Currently poring through travel books for an upcoming
trip to New Zealand, and leafing through a book on yurts from the
library 'cause it looked interesting. Accepting recommendations for
books to take on my vacation. I recently gave up on re-reading
Watership Down; it's as tough a slog as I remember.
Movies: I don't see a lot of movies in the theater (did enjoy the
new Hunger Games) but I rent/download a lot -- Coen Brothers, Wes
Anderson, documentaries, independents, "films", Hollywood crap,
Shows: I haven’t had cable for years so don’t watch much scheduled
TV anymore. I binge on TV series, as in, watched the entire West
Wing series in less than 2 months; whole seasons of the Wire in a
week, etc. HBO’s the best. Just watched the BBC series Skins, which
was fun, like Degrassi on MDMA. There are a few podcasts I dig,
too, like Stuff You Should Know & This American Life.
Music: I’ve been described as a victim of the Canadian content
rules, and it’s true that I’m a Radio 2 junkie, but my favourite
bands are Radiohead & Wilco. Favourite Canadian bands right now
are the Barr Brothers (so good live) & Hey Rosetta. I guiltily
enjoy some pop too -- man, that Daft Punk tune is catchy. Been
listening to Dr. Dog a lot recently.
I love live music and really hope to share this with my partner (I
hate to miss a show for not having anyone to go with - I tried once
going alone and it's as pathetic as it sounds). There’s a world of
music on my iPod that I never hear and love it when someone new
picks it up and plays DJ (though you'd be surprised how often they
pick Kid Rock). I also have a playlist called "sing along" for car
Food: All of it. Full-fat Liberte yogurt. Kimchi Soon Tofu. Snacks.
