My self-summary
I can often be found with my nose in a book while noodling at the piano. I like this because it combines two of my favorite things: music and reading. For the same reason, I read books on science and fiddle with a guitar while wasting time on my computer. If nothing else, I'm efficient with my hobbies.

If I were to describe myself, I would choose phrases such as "dashing astronomy nerd," "creates a fire hazard by reading books while cooking," and "do not place in direct sunlight."

More to the point, I'm a scientist, a musician, a reader of books, a cooker of foods, a person who grudgingly enjoys the outdoors (fine, I guess those trees are pretty and the sun is warm on my back, I suppose), and I'm way more of a romantic and idealist than my demeanor would suggest.
What I’m doing with my life
Just left my position as a professor teaching math, physics, and astronomy at Schenectady Community College in order to begin (well, resume) graduate school at RPI. The plan's to get my doctorate in physics, then dive back into the warm embrace of academia.

(In case you're wondering how I was a professor without my doctorate, you only need a master's degree to teach at most community colleges.)
I’m really good at
Math. Calculating tips. Contemplating the heavens on clear nights. Rambling about astrophysics. Music. Cooking. Unintentionally whacking my extremities on doorjambs and walls.
The first things people usually notice about me
I use a lot of semicolons and parenthetical asides in written communication.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Hmmm, a tough one. I like to read a lot. Like, a LOT. Favorite authors include Terry Pratchett, Jim Butcher, Stephen King, and Kurt Vonnegut; favorite genres include fiction, fantasy, biography, history, science, and politics.

Movies: I have terrible taste in movies. My idea of a movie is something that will entertain me for a couple hours and make it worth getting to Colonie Center and coughing up eleven bucks. So I enjoy crap like Pacific Rim, Oblivion, Godzilla, and goofy comedies. If it has Seth Rogen in it, I'll probably at least like it. I

I do enjoy classic movies like the Godfather and the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, but I can watch those on my own time for free.

Also, Airplane! is the greatest comedy ever made.

Shows: For sitcoms, I enjoy Frasier, Scrubs, Seinfeld, and How I Met Your Mother. For longer shows, my favorites are Breaking Bad, Boston Legal, and The West Wing. In general, I really appreciate good writing and tasteful blendings of comedy and drama.

Music: Depends on what I've been listening to recently. This can be anything from Beethoven to Frank Sinatra to the Beatles to Iron Maiden. In general, though, I enjoy classical, classic rock, a bit of folk and punk, a lot of metal, and movie soundtracks (there is no god but John Williams and Howard Shore is His prophet).

Food: Rare steaks. Sushi. Potatoes, baked or mashed. Asparagus with Hollandaise sauce. Salmon. Craft beer (RIP Mahar's). Red wine. Earl Grey tea. Hot wings from Bombers.
The six things I could never do without
My books. At any given time, I'm reading at least one book.

My iPod. The only Apple product I've ever purchased. It keeps me from going crazy on long drives, walks, whatever.

Comfortable socks. Seriously, SmartWool is the best sock material ever invented, and necessary in the winter.

Dry-erase markers. How am I supposed to teach if I can't write on the whiteboard?

My guitars. I love music just as much as I love reading.

The Internet. It's how I'm entertained and do research and work. Pretty much wouldn't be able to function without it.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Why grading is such a gigantic pain in the ass. What TV show to marathon next on Netflix. When Fallout 4 is going to come out. Why so many people get the STALE/STEAL question wrong. Ethics and social justice. Whether academia is worth all this trouble.
On a typical Friday night I am
Drinking beer somewhere. Probably with friends. Pontificating about things that no one else cares about.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I own a hoodie with elbow patches.
