My self-summary
Doing my best to do good for people.

Activist/organizer/writer. Work a lot. LOVE what I do. More on that below. Big loud straight cis white dude doing my best to live as a humble, anti-racist, anti-oppressive feminist. Add joy and sarcasm, and stir.

The other important things I love that offer some explanation of me:
Movies movies movies. Portland & Oregon. Music, books, art, food, sass and strangers.

My late grandma is my hero. She was tiny, Jewish and a completely amazing activist. I may bring her up in early conversations, because she was the greatest and I have trouble not talking about it.
What I’m doing with my life
Traveling the country to help young people (mostly women and people of color) start progressive nonprofits and then giving them support to succeed. Otherwise, trying to be the best person I can be while not taking that person too seriously.

On top of that, I write some (currently working *very slowly* on a play), run and bike as much as I can, do a little bit of chef-ing & try to know as many people as deeply as I can.

Also, I dog-sat for Chuck Palahniuk once. It has nothing to do with what I'm doing with my life, but it seems worth mentioning.
I’m really good at
Getting excited about things. Laughing. Writing. Connecting people with one-another. Talking to strangers. Listening (if I'm being my better self). Loving movies, music, poetry, books and painting. Trying to get better at cooking and running.
The first things people usually notice about me
Pretty tall for someone that Jewy. Has a beard. Loud voice. Laughs a lot.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Things They Carried, Everything Is Illuminated, Travels with Charley, Cat's Cradle, Lolita, The Maltese Falcon, Unfamiliar Fishes, Rules for Radicals, The Great Gatsby, Kennedy & Nixon, Angels in America, Topdog/Underdog, On the Road, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Cannery Row, True West, all kinds of Raymond Chandler

Movies (long long long list, but some of the greatest hits):
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Good Night & Good Luck, The Station Agent, The Good, the Bad & the Ugly, The Godfather (I & II), Brick/ Chinatown/Drive (pretty much the whole genre of neo noir), The Big Sleep, The Big Lebowski, A Prophet, Almost Famous, Inglorious Basterds, The Darjeeling Limited, Lincoln, Newsies

Ooof. Too much to list (obviously, cuz I'm a human being and that's what human beings say)
Lately, though: Kendrick Lamar, Odd Future, Typhoon, Blakroc, ProleteR, Caravan Palace, Haim, Angel Hayes, The Black Keys, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Agesandages, Childish Gambino, Janelle Monae, Brother Ali, Kanye West, Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Mayer Hawthorne, Vampire Weekend, The Heavy, Wild Ones, Y La Bamba. And I can't tell if Ke$ha is a guilty pleasure or just a pleasure.

THE WIRE. Greatest show ever. After that, Arrested Development (#2 greatest show ever), True Detective, Archer, the League, Community, Parks & Rec, Sherlock, Treme

Radiolab, My Brother My Brother and Me, Planet Money, WTF with Marc Maron, Revolutions

Ta-Nehisi Coates, Jezebel, ColorLines, Matt Yglesias, Black Girl Dangerous, Splitsider, other shit now and again. Open to suggestions.

Italian, French, Japanese, Thai, Mexican, lots of green vegetables & balsamic vinegar. (trying to expand, all the while)
The six things I could never do without
Strangers to talk to
The good ol' bike (or, failing that, public transit)
Good movies
Delicious food
Inspiring friends
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How awesome democracy is (really, it's miraculous!). How much I miss Philip Seymour Hoffman. How television became an incredible artistic medium, like, *overnight*. When the next great neo-noir movie is going to come out. How to get Hollywood to stop casting Jack Black in things.
On a typical Friday night I am
Enjoying a beer with friends, enjoying a beer-and-movie at the Laurelhurst or catching a concert of some sort of flannel-wearing hipster music.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I keep a teddy bear in my room. Its name is Green Ears. I've had it since I was a baby.

You're smart and the following is true: you take a few things very seriously, but very rarely take yourself seriously.
