My Notes edit

My self-summary

I'm a geek, living in Boston for a few years and working as a lab technician while I get my act together to enter medicine. Along the way, I enjoy sailing, writing, reading, contradancing, and tabletop gaming- board games, war games, and role-playing games.

I act like a cynic sometimes, but if you start talking to me chances are that I care deeply about whatever it is I've just brushed off. I chew over problems in my head, and will often pick up a conversation that I broke off a few days earlier because I just thought of a better answer. If I say I don't care about something, start an argument with me- I'll bet you that I won't be able to walk away, if only because I can't resist an intellectual challenge.

I've lived near the water my entire life in one form or another- hiking along rivers, swimming in ponds, sailing on the Charles. Between that and a recurring obsession with sea chanteys and folk music, sometimes I feel I've been shaped in the water. I can't help but grin a little bit every time I come to a stream when I'm out hiking, and stopping for a second to listen to the sound of the running water.

I'm not going to be in the city forever, and it's going to be a good while before I can think about settling down- but I'd like to make my last six months or so in Boston a good one. Interested?

**Note: I'm currently in Jamaica Plain, not Brighton. I just can't figure out how to tell OKCupid that.

Later edit: Oh, right, so that's how you do it. I went to college, I swear!

What I'm doing with my life

I have an undergrad degree in biology, and after a couple years working as a research technician I've decided to apply to medical school. I've just gotten done with a whirl of interviews, and already got into one place- and now I'm playing a waiting game and doing my best to distract myself and make the most of the time I have left before I start. Medicine excites me a great deal, and I think I could make a really good doctor- but it's a bit like staring off a cliff. In a few months, my life will change radically, but I don't know how yet.

I'm really good at

Writing short stories, and more recently comic books. Handling a sailboat. Saying sarcastic things, usually at the right time. Memorizing sea chanteys. Coming up with amusing games for my friends on short notice. Remembering snatches from books I read years ago. Claiming I don't care about things and then getting into flaming arguments about them. Staying up talking later than I should. Talking for hours about odd, geeky, or odd and geeky things. Building an improvised shelter in the woods with the contents of my survival kit.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

I'm really tall. I wear glasses. I sometimes forget to shave for longer than I really should. I wear casual clothes unless it would be wildly inappopriate. I'm almost never without my backpack, with books and a notebook. I have a good memory, and can launch into lectures about things I care about at the slightest provocation.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Anything by Tim Powers, Going After Cacciato, Graham Greene, Terry Pratchett, the harder side of sci fi, and history books. I have a huge crush on cyberpunk: Neuromancer, Count Zero, Mona Lisa Overdrive, Virtual Light, Idoru, All Tomorrow's Parties, Hardwired and anything- I mean anything- by Neal Stephenson. Allright, that's more genres and authors than books.

In the nonfiction realm, I'm currently working through books about the Imperial Japanese Navy- just got pretty much the whole stack of them from a combination of Christmas gifts and runs to used book stores. That's my current research obsession, who knows what the next one will be. Right now I'm working my way through Kaigun and Shattered Sword- I have to keep switching between books to keep from getting bored.

TV Shows: Firefly (Those who cancelled it shall burn in a very special hell, along with child molesters and people who talk in the theater), Battlestar Galactica, most anime.

Movies: Apollo 13, Top Gun, Serenity, Ocean's 11 (and other good heist movies), The Final Countdown, Firefox, Lucky Number Slevin, Unforgiven, Gross Pointe Blank, The Hunt for Red October (We shail into hishtory!), Event Horizon. And the best movie I've ever seen, Casablanca. Awful movies of any stripe, so that I can laugh at them.

Music: all kinds of folk, Carbon Leaf, and Tom Russell, R.E.M., The Eagles, Gin Blossoms, Warren Zevon, and 80s Hair Rock (my guilty pleasure)

Food: Tex-Mex- it's spicy, and I can actually cook it! Chinese, and there's always pizza.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Medicine, and whether I can live up to a promise of lifelong service. How social problems can be fixed without coercion, which usually makes things worse. How to find the stall speed of a Nakajima Ki-43 fighter. Whether I'll make it into- much less out of- medical school alive. Whether I need to tack my sailboat now or if I can go a few more minutes without running into shore.

On a typical Friday night I am

Probably sitting at home working on a creative project, or out with a small group of friends gaming or watching a movie.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I get guilty pleasure from watching Top Gun.

You should message me if

You're a little bit on the geek side and not afraid to admit it. You're smart, have a dry sense of humor, and don't mind not knowing exactly Where Things Are Going (note caps). You like sailing on the Charles River, or think it might be neat. You saw that I play RPGs, and your initial reaction was, "ooh, what systems?" You don't mind the fact that I will be humming folk songs under my breath most of the time.
