I am studious, balanced, and manifold.

My Self-Summary

First, I'm a graduate student in English. That's important, because that's what I spend most of my waking hours doing. I read literature and articles; I work with professors and colleagues on various projects; I brainstorm for my own ideas; I write articles. It's immersive, and given the right mood I can talk at length about any facet of the process.

Outside of that, I'm interested in many things. I like my science fiction and fantasy books/movies. I enjoy all kinds of games, from board and card games to RPGs and video games. I love bowling, tennis, and playing any other sports, when I have the time. I enjoy discussions on a wide array of subjects, whether science, politics, literature, words, randomness, or what have you.

Sometimes I take up new hobbies or do new things on a whim. They can be big, like the time I decided to do Greek dancing for a year or the time I started making a suit of chainmail (progress is slow). They can be small, like deciding that now is the perfect time to hike up Stone Mountain or to visit a bar I've never been to.

I'm sometimes a little shy, preferring low-pressure socializing to being the life of a party. Occasionally I can throw caution to the wind and dance the night away, but I appreciate the calmer pace of a museum or coffee shop.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm earning a PhD right now in English Literature. It will take several years. After that, I hope to get a job as a professor somewhere, but generally I'm open to teaching, being a librarian, and lots of other things. I want a job where I help other people, but which can also be an adventure for me. It wouldn't do to get bored, after all.

I’m really good at

Reading, writing, bowling, math, games, problem-solving, finding quick and efficient ways to say things (also known as making up words).

The first things people usually notice about me

Perhaps the eyes, the polite greeting, the height, the faint but tremorous sound of gears clicking in my head, or a slight, amused grin. People perpetually amuse me.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Too many. I'll list a few as a rough sampling, and ask forgiveness for the ones I forget. :)

Music:
A disclaimer here. I love all kinds of music, but I've seldom paid attention to what I've heard over the years. I gravitate towards soundtracks, random songs, and classical music. I'm getting better, but I'm not too great at spontaneously talking about most bands. I'll list the bands that stick out.
Enya
They Might Be Giants
VNV Nation
Daft Punk
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
Stephen Sondheim
The Beatles

Food:
Bread. It's a staple, and goes well with about any meal.
Pizza.
Dark chocolate. Really, chocolate of any kind.
Pasta.
Ice cream.
Sushi.

The six things I could never do without

Sleep, a book to read, a pen, my memories, bread, and chocolate.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Random pieces of literature, how to incorporate video game studies with my professed medievalist interests, social mores, gender, the future, the biosphere, architectural designs of buildings, and any random thing that pops into my head.

On a typical Friday night I am

Either playing with my brother online, or going out, sometimes with friends, and sometimes just to sightsee.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I don't know what's private enough, honestly. You'll have to ask.

You should message me if

You want to find out more about me. If you have any questions. If you just want a random conversation. If you want to see whether we might have some potential. If you take issue with what I say. If you want to be random together.
