My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Science, art, music, culture... I've lived in a lot of places, studied a bunch of languages, done some scientific and comic illustration, acquired an assortment of degrees, raised two flawlessly perfect boys (one artist and one scientist, go figure), played competitive badminton, was certified in SCUBA, have done fieldwork all up and down the east coast, have studied an assortment of instruments since the 2nd grade, but now only play the Celtic harp. I'm a field-trained marine biologist who sadly moved away from zoology into human biology, but that's cool too. I'm a college professor, and I consult for industry, write, and give talks. And I love spiders. And bugs. I mean, not to eat or anything (although I have not been above feeding insects to students before).

Yes, yes, I know I sound like a rock star - let's face it, college professors are pretty much in the same category - but really I'm just pretty average.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I teach, do an assortment of administrative things for the college (I sit on the IRB... those of you with grant proposals fear me), advise my students (who are fabulous), write all manner of medical things, give talks, go to meetings...

Mostly, I want to sit in front of a fire with a glass of wine - inside or outside. I want to be out under the trees or on the water. I want to wear my comfy jeans and a soft flannel shirt and listen to fire noises or wind or water noises, or thunderstorms, or crickets, and just be peaceful. I just want to be peaceful, and happy.

I want to laugh. My boys make me laugh all the time (but they're pretty twisted). I love watching MST3K with them, I love the Stooges, Monty Python - almost all dry or buffoonery Brit humor - the old National Lampoon. I still read Mad Magazine, and I don't even care what the postman thinks when he delivers it.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Sitting very quietly out in the nature. Otherwise, I write reasonably well (fortunately, since I teach it), and I have REALLY GOOD LETTERING.

Books... yow. Last count, I had (no lie) over 3000 of them in the house. I've tried to divest over the years, but it's still "a problem." My fave of all time is Dracula. Authors and my tastes change over time, but I've always been a big fan of Margaret Atwood, Stephen King, Annie Proulx and others. I am MAJORLY into comics, comic art, and graphic novels (but I am not a "fan girl" no matter what my buddy Justin calls me - he's just a freaking all out-and-out GEEK is what he is). I was into comics (drew them) when I was younger, and now my elder son is drawing them and he keeps turning me on to more and more stuff.

Having raised two boys, the movies I tended to see were the action-y, superhero-y kinds of movies, and they're still my faves. My boys are sweet and sometime promise not even to see the "latest" until they're home with me. Skyfall was the last one.

I don't watch TV; I don't even own one. I have a hackle-raising aversion to them, for reasons I don't completely understand. This doesn't mean I won't watch shows on my computer, though; loved Six Feet Under, Mad Men, Psych, Dexter, and Breaking Bad.

Musically, I'm all over the map. It's kind of like an "I'll know I like it if I hear it" kind of thing. I can be a supreme music snob, but not by genre. I mean, I play the Celtic harp, right? I'm Irish, right (I am)? I can't stand Irish harp music, all the jigs and reels and stuff. The best Celtic harp music is Scottish. This will get me shot by 98% of the people who play the Celtic harp. But pfft. I'd also prefer to play regular baroque classical music or medieval (Brave Sir Robin on my harp with my son playing the flute - awesome) or contemporary (got the sheet music for "Lazarus" to play on my harp because of that boss opening keyboard sequence and my harp teacher told me I was insane). So I can say I like "rock," because I really do, but some of it sucks. I can't say I hate rap, because some of it doesn't suck. I can say I really don't like American (C&W) music, but then I can spend 4 hours at the Grand Ole Opry museum swooning over the stuff I'm hearing. But OK. I like "rock" and "pop" and "indie" and "world" and "folk" and "jazz" and "R&B" and "classical" (especially baroque). I listen to a classic rock station in the morning that, I have to say, pretty much plays everything l like.

I eat everything, I'm reasonably adventurous (just got back from Two Very Adventurous Culinary Weeks in Japan). I like fish the best, but am a carnivore in general. Love salads. I'm lazy as hell; don't usually cook per se unless I've got company.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Family, friends, nature, humor, fulfilling work, music
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Simplifying. Downsizing. Working less. More time with coffee and cats in the sun, less time being type-A editorial.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
In front of a fire with a glass of wine and assorted cats. In nice weather, sitting outside. If I can get somewhere quiet, I like that. Not into parties or crowds. If I can, I'll go away for a weekend to hike or ski or visit friends.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
