I am warm-hearted, self-aware, and pro-hyphen.
My Self-Summary
For those of you who are curious about my screen name, I called
myself LloydDoblerAt40 because I absolutely love the movie 'Say
Anything', and I've always been able to relate to the character
played by John Cusack. Not because he's a kick-boxer - I've never
kick-boxed in my life, and I definitely don't regard it as the
'sport of the future' - but because of his personality traits: his
positive outlook ("How hard is it to decide to be in a good mood
and be in a good mood once in a while?"), his integrity and
nonmaterialism ("I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or
process anything as a career..."), his appreciation of
unconventionality ("You used to be warped and twisted and hilarious
- and I mean that in the best way.") and his dedication to
relationships (best illustrated when he says to his girlfriend's
father, "What I really want to do with my life - what I want to do
for a living - is I want to be with your daughter. I'm good at
it.")
These Dobleresque qualities are values that are very important to
me and that I work hard to live by.
I’m really good at
Talking, listening, telling the truth, being myself, accepting
others, and making the most of every moment.
The first things people usually notice about me
They might notice that I'm relatively tall, somewhat dark, and not
entirely unhandsome (my eyes, ears, nose and mouth are all in
roughly the right position on my head.) Mostly, I think, they
notice my incessant smiling.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Books: The Catcher in the Rye, Geek Love, anything by Jon Krakauer,
and David Lynch's book about meditation, 'Catching the Big
Fish'.
Movies: Knowing how much I love movies, it would be very easy to
get carried away and list dozens of films, but I'll limit myself to
the first ten that come to mind: Something Wild, Being There, Into
the Wild, A Room With a View, Hannah and Her Sisters, Amadeus,
Revolutionary Road, The Celebration, Broadcast News and - of course
- Say Anything.
Music: As a listener, I go through phases. At various times in my
life, I've been a rabid Beatles fan, a slightly pretentious jazz
aficionado and a classic rock devotee. There was even a period of
time where I only listened to movie soundtracks. These days, I seem
to be on a 70's music kick. You play some old school Stevie Wonder
or The Band, and I'm a happy camper.
Food: Yes, please.
The six things I could never do without
HBO, my running shoes, sunday afternoon naps, my incredible
friendships, orange creamsicles and my undying belief in true love.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The steps I need to take to become more aware, creative,
spontaneous, health-conscious, relaxed and giving.
On a typical Friday night I am
Either watching artsy movies, playing Beatles: Rock Band (I'm a
darn fine harmonizer, if I do say so my darn self), babysitting one
of my gazillion cousins, nieces and nephews (which generally
involves watching Finding Nemo or Barbie: Fairytopia for the
gazillionth time), or filling out endless dating site
questionnaires.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
In 1983, my three favourite albums (or more accurately, audio
cassettes) were 'Cuts Like a Knife', 'Can't Slow Down' and
'Sports'. If you know who recorded each of those records - and are
brave enough to admit it - you get 10 bonus points and my undying
respect.
You should message me if
Reading all this stuff about me has intrigued you, or made you
smile, or reminded you of yourself.
