Melville, Hawthorne, Dickinson, Twain, Hunter S. Thompson, Arthur
Conan Doyle, Orwell, Gaiman, Warren Ellis, Bradbury, Arthur C.
Clarke, Dorothy Parker, Marjane Satrapi. Currently developing a
taste for: Pynchon, Huxley. Also a heap of nonfiction about current
affairs, science, and society.
Young Frankenstein. Koyaanisqatsi. Also: Kubrick,
Kurosawa, Woody Allen, Sam Peckinpah, Chuck Jones, Miyazaki, and
Godzilla. (Later I would notice that listing Godzilla in this
fashion makes it sound like he is a director. I would like to visit
The Wire. Rachel Maddow. 30 Rock. Always Sunny. Star Trek.
Bourdain. Frontline/Nova/stufflikethat. Game of Thrones.
Tom Waits. Billy Idol. David Bowie. Stones. John Adams (the
composer, not the dead president). Frank Zappa. BB King. Medeski,
Martin & Wood. Any good real jazz (smooth jazz must be placed
in a fire). Igor Stravinsky. Gustav Holst. There are too many bands
to know about so mostly I go to a lot of shows completely blind or
based on the thinnest of recommendations. Some bands I learned to
love this way this year: Moon Hooch, The Terror Pigeon Dance
Indian curry, Thai curry. Sushi. Almost anything that at one time
or another lived in the ocean. Prosciutto. Rare steaks. Would trade
firstborn for a large platter of tacos al pastor. Oh, and pretty
much anything with a noodle or fifty.
