My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Photographer, ex-literary academic, writer, jazz pianist, relentlessly curious, non-ideological radical, I love intimacy, warmth, language, physicality. I am loyal, supportive and curious about your life, relationships and adventures. I love expertise, and hope you'll share yours with me. I And if you ask me, I'll play the piano for you. I pursued the jazz piano will-o'-the-wisp for 22 years, then returned to teaching college. But though I love teaching, I didn't like being exploited, so I opened a photography business and haven't looked back. This business allows me time to be creative, to be politically active, and to travel when I want.

Hopefully, you share similar fascinations and qualities, have a robust intellect, a degree of wit and love of laughter, are articulate, adventurous, and in good health. I love to be overwhelmed by beauty and the sublime—and it's out there! We should share openness, great skepticism towards conventional wisdom and entertainments, and a voracious desire to know the world, both inner and outer.

I'm a cultural atheist, in that I don't believe in the gods of religious mythologies (though I find them fascinating). But I also know that the very space of our universe conducts what can only be called spiritual energy, and that we can draw on this energy. It's real and can be very powerful. We all have it in us to partake of this power and energy, and in fact, we can only accomplish great things if we do.
I have two grown daughters, with whom I'm very close, and who constantly amaze me. I also love to cook and eat ethnic.

I believe our civilization is seriously threatened, having been taken over by powerful economic interests, who've bought enough politicians to be able to control things, including the corporate media. There are hopeful stirrings in popular movements here and abroad, and looming climate change may bring us to our senses—or drive us farther into the hostile defensiveness of a citadel state. We're already pretty rough on the immigrants who come here, often out of desperation at their own economies that our corporations have ruined.

Luckily, life is multi-faceted, multi-leveled. Nature is multifarious, huge, productive, and magnificent if you know where to look. And we're part of it, a miraculous part, and luckily we have love, passion and sex, a transverse current to all the mendacity and corruption, oppression and exploitation, in our world. This is, incidentally, what I try to bring out in my art. It's also why geology & prehistory fascinate me, since they offer viewpoints that allow us to step out of the immediate turmoil and view things from a larger perspective. It's important to be aware of the destructive forces abroad, since this clears the mind and engages us in the camaraderie and struggle to try to oppose them. And we need to fuel ourselves with humor and delight. It would be much more fun working for those goals and sharing the humor and delight with you.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Earning a good living as a portrait & wedding photographer, studying networking and sales, I express myself through travel and fine art photography. I read widely in history & politics, and want to read more novels. I keep up with a number of magazines, including The Nation, the NYRB, Harper's, Adbusters, the New Yorker, Aperture and Outdoor Photographer. I listen to Amy Goodman, Michael Rattner, Bonnie Faulkner, Rick Wolff and others on WBAI.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Photography, playing the piano, uncritical acceptance, listening, taking criticism, psychological understanding, personal growth and inspiring others in same, sharing what I know, travel, cooking, basic carpetry & repairs, laughter & deadpan humor.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Warmth, articulateness, intelligence, that I'm ready to joke with anyone.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

I read a lot of politics and history, but I love novels, too. Years ago I did serious studies of Flaubert & George Eliot, but I also love Joyce, Dostoevsky, Gore Vidal, Proust, Céline, Isabel Allende, Rushdie, Arundati Roy, and just read Forster's "Passage to India." I watch a lot of documentaries, and I love serious films. I cut my cinephile teeth on Fellini & Bergman. Recently I ate up "Hannah Arendt." I'm a jazz person, who knows classical music fairly well, embraces contemporary serious music, including electronic and concrete, like New Age, some folk. I don't seek out pop music, but I enjoy dancing to it. In art, I'm still a student and devotee of the Surrealists, love abstract art, and greatly appreciate the wit in much of contemporary art. And I have a list of favorite photographers who've influenced me, starting with Cartier-Bresson. I love various ethnic arts, actively pursue outsider art and architecture, like the Rubin Museum. I go to a lot of art fairs and galleries. Fan of avant garde everything. Food: Ethiopian, Indian, Japanese, Middle Eastern, pan-Asian, Mexican and more. I cook a lot, always very healthy, do juicing from time to time.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
My daughters above all, and my friends. The other things that keep me happy are exercise, stimulation (intellectual, aesthetic, physical), books, and various objects, e.g. camera, computer, car, radio and iPod. Also fruit. That must be more than six.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Politics, how our civilization is breaking down, and what we can do about it; climate change, photography & art; poetry and history; new projects, marketing my craft, personal growth.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Out with a friend to a movie, or else home working; no hard and fast habits here.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I watch virtually no television.
