Your Notes

I am tranquil, dynamic, and introverted.

My Self-Summary

Well I'm geeky. I tend to watch anime, martial arts films, indie films, comedies, and the occasional block-buster. Being the geek that I am I also play games (PS2, DS, and computer), use the web, create art work in Illustrator, PhotoShop, Flash, game objects in Alias Maya, and websites using a text editor with color coding like ConText.

If you do like anime I can wholeheartedly say that I've seen several of the common ones like "Shinseki Evangelion", "Serial Experiments: Lain", "FLCL", "Full Metal Panic: Fumofu", "Dirty Pair", "Urusei Yatsura", "El Hazard", "Naruto, and "Nuku Nuku". Sadly enough I still haven't seen all of "Cowboy Bebop" or "Samurai Champolo" despite them being fairly common favorites.

I try to get outside as often as I can and thus I bike a fair amount as well as having an avid interest in photography (I now finally have that pro-sumer camera and have been avidly burning battery life—of course my main work computer needs a new hard disk; such is life). Other traditional artistic pursuits (stuff outside of photo) would include pastels, charcoal, conte, graphite, and pen & ink.

I also usually test as an INTJ, but 25% of the time I test as INTP (3/4 values are close to borderline for me, but only the J and the P switch at seemingly random when I'm my normal and relaxed state; though when I take the test when under emotional strain the only thing that remains constant is the I—being pushed emotionally by some powerful, external force is the only thing that will do this to me, but I think that's typically the case for most people). Though I don't always put too much stock in the test since it's more of an amusement for me than anything else.

Recently I've started helping my friends make cosplay props whilst only minimally working on my own. My current on going project is a television grade replica of a certain sword for a cosplay at some future, unspecified date. I know, I know, everyone says that they're going to do cosplay and eventually end up putting on something that they throw together in 30 minutes by rifling through their closet one week before.

What I’m doing with my life

Right now I'm an "art rōnin" as I like to call it (I could say "freelance", but that term was derived from European knights and I think that using the asian counterpart is far more appropriate for me). I'd very much like to do something a tad more steady, but right now I'm managing to live a life of some sort with what I'm doing. Of course this has me doing everything from designing logos to editing video; from drawing illustrations to making broken websites work; from churning out business cards to editing audio; from making/papering fliers to operating a studio camera.

Hey, even rōnin used to take on jobs as farmers.

I’m really good at

Well, dealing with uncharted electronic territory. In other words: if you give me a computer program or a game or even some piece of new technology I can figure out most of its nuances in a few hours. Although this isn't to say that I can't learn new things about something as I find myself constantly learning new techniques for these things.

O.K. for those of you who find that of little interest I'm alright with computer or console games (I play them, have some skill and have fun) and when I actually get outside I'm actually good at rock scrambling during rougher hikes (borderline rock climbing). I can also draw fairly well with my weak spot being drawing people (I still need to draw out all the guide lines or draw by observation).

The first things people usually notice about me

Um...I'm Asian and I have been told by even other Asian people younger than me that I look younger than I actually am. Actually the few times I've decided to go out in public with my hair a shade on the long side, while wearing glasses, and a tad stubbly I've not been carded. It takes a lot to convince people of my age. Of course this is despite the fact that I do have a couple of white hairs growing at the front (I've had most of those since high school). Due to this I once considered growing out my hair and bleaching out the front a'la James Iha.

People also notice that I'm chronically verbose—to some this is a tad off-putting. They also notice that I don't "look like" an art sort or even "talk like" an art sort.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

(A) The last book that I read was Haruki Murakami's "The Windup Bird Chronicles" and it was a particularly odd, but intersting read. Currently I'm re-re-reading Stephen Hawkings' "A Brief History of Time" because I was a quantum physicist/computer programmer/mechanical engineer in a parallel universe.

(B) Probably "Bakha Satang" (called "Peppermint Candy" in the U.S. release) as well as "Shall We Dansu" (the original Japanese version, not the U.S. version). Then again "Hawks and Sparrows" was good too. Oh and I probably shouldn't forget "Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi"—known here in the U.S. as "Spirited Away". I also have a bit of a fascination with Jim Jarmusch films.

As for all time favorite comedies I like "Sleeper", "L.A. Story", and "Shakespeare in Love". However, I also have been known to like various movies starring either or both John Cleese and Michael Palin.

As for uncatagorizable all time favorites I like "Le Fabuleux destin d'Am—lie Poulain"—known here as "Amelie".

Oh and I like martial arts films (usually the foreign ones), but you may have already seen that in my opening paragraph.

...and despite it not being a movie I'm rather enamored with the TV show "Heroes", but mostly because I think Masi Oka's performance is too much fun. I also like "Firefly", but only got to see it when it was just released on DVD and hope that "Dollhouse"—it's kind of growing on me—continues with a much longer run (it uses Whedon's standard archetypes, but with a few new ones and seems to have a subtext regarding what is human, and a bit of sub-subtext regarding being an actor in Hollywood—though that may just be me reading into the main actress being head producer and the writer/creator sometimes writing snarky self-awareness and satire into his works). Furthermore, I really did love "Freaks and Geeks" during it's brief, but brilliant run.

(C) I like 50-70s "classic rock" & "oldies", 80s new wave, early '90s U2 type "modern rock" including U2, a few electronic groups like Leftfield, classical music, and early to mid 20th century jazz. Of course this doesn't mean that I'm opposed to the occasional recent song due to its novelty factor. I you want specifics of general favorites here you go: U2, Depeche Mode, Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Beatles (doesn't everyone?), Leftfield, Antonio Vivaldi, George Frideric Handel, Dave Brubeck. However, I'm rather enjoying the soundtrack from the game Braid which sort of lies between traditional classical and jazz styles—quite interesting to listen to as I do personal art projects.

(D) This is a particularly tough one. I happen to have been exposed to a fair variety of eastern (including, but not limited to Northern, Western, and Southern Chinese cuisines, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, and Indian) and western (including, but not limited to French, Dutch, Spanish, Mexican, Cuban, and Italian) cuisines and thus really can't place a preference on any particular overall favorite (I however have favorites within each culture—too numerous to list here).

These days, I do find myself drinking a lot of tea as well as Kerns nectar drinks. I'm still trying to learn how to make horchata (Mexican "rice water", it tastes like rice pudding with cinnamon).

The six things I could never do without

Well if you're not talking about absolutes;

Computer/quick web access, friends, good food, Kern's Nectars or tea (green or jasmine), cellphone/mobile communication, and my bicycle.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

I spend a lot of time thinking about contingency. Sometimes it's something big such as "If that friend hadn't moved away would I have been in a different social set during high school due to me being friends with them? Possibly having a drastically different personality as thus a different outlook on life—different friends, different manner of dress, ownership of a motor vehicle, different university, different dating-life, etc." Sometimes it's small silly things such as "If I hadn't chosen to go and hang out with this friend and had received the phone call from another friend and hung out with them would my evening have been any better or worse due to my decision at that juncture?"

I also spend time playing with/creating odd little theories as to why certain trends happen/ed. (I have a few about the ties between coffee, Seattle, and Grunge rock as well as a few on other trends)

On a typical Friday night I am

Mostly at home since I've been applying for jobs at various companies and working on various last minute projects for various clients. I'm also either trying to create new portfolio pieces and apply to more companies or hatching plans for Saturday or Sunday (I'm planning on buying a plan incubator so that they'll hatch faster ^_-).

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Well, most of my female friends meow for some reason or another. Why this is weird is that I'm told that I should wear a bell since I'm a little too quiet when moving around. So it's kind of a strange coincidence I think catgirls (not anthropomorphic sorts, but the ones who are based on the cartoon girls with the ears and the tail—I'm using anthropomorphic since the site icebreaker engine matches based on anything in the profile) are cute and cuddly (maybe it's that I've watched a shade too much anime). I think that just may have frightened off quite a few girls with that statement. For those who stayed, er, hello. ^_^ (or maybe =^_^= if you prefer)

You should message me if

...you want to become friends or maybe just want to have a conversation for whatever reason.

All things below are optional, but would make much more to converse about.

...you can name songs that aren't current American Top 40 songs (you could name a Top 40 song from a decade back or from some non-English speaking nation's Top 40 and it would be fine), but don't really consider yourself indie.

...you hear the abbreviation "AX" and can think of more than just a store to shop at.

...when you hear the abbreviation R.P.G. and you think of either raising a few of your character's stats or where it's located in a particular level or both.

...you find reading blogs like "Joystiq", "Engadget", or "Gizmodo" or sites like "Makezine" potentially more interesting than reading blogs like "The Superficial", "D-List", and "Perez-Hilton".

...you find your geekdom makes you have vastly more in common with other geeks than non-geeky people of your ancestral/cultural heritage.

...you find yourself at events that are better when you're in costume, on your own time, more than the mainstream 1 or 2 days a year (or find a burning need to put up a photo of yourself in costume on your profile) then you should also send me a message.

...you consider yourself someone interested in art/design/fabrication and can be a bit of a D.I.Y., hands-on sort.

...a night spent playing games or watching anime at a friend's place sounds more like fun than a bore, definitely message me.

Basically send me a message if you're geeky (especially the gamer/anime sort) and/or interested in art/design/fabrication or don't mind talking to someone who enjoys all of the above. ^_^
