My self-summary
I'm a generally well adjusted, adventurous and fun-loving gentleman who always chooses the outdoors when given a choice. I have traveled all over the world and plan to continue doing so, and I enjoy making new friends and learning about others. My passions include history, politics, great food and wine, and doing what I can to make the world a little bit better. I moved (back) to New York three years ago for an exciting, demanding job doing something that matters to me. Now that I'm kind of settled, I want to explore this amazing city and its surroundings.

I am healthy, happy, and pretty active. I'm one of those people who actually enjoys going to the gym, but I'm even happier when enjoying outdoor activity like bicycling or hiking. (I also love running and have done five marathons, but running is off the list due to a recurring knee injury. Sigh.)

(Note: Between my iPhone and my home and office computers, OKC may show me as " online now" even if I'm not actually there.)
What I’m doing with my life
I make my living as a communicator, writing, advisor and policy geek. As I've grown up, my work is important, but it's not how I define myself. Work makes everything else possible, which for me, is writing, being with friends and family, learning about other people, other cultures, other points of view, and trying my best to treat others the way I want them to treat me.
I’m really good at
Listening. Watching. Learning.

Getting involved in informed debates (usually political) on Twitter and in real life. I learn by listening to what others say and think.

analyzing situations and helping find solutions, brushing off trivial things that others dwell on.

Traveling on short notice.

And I'm a really really good cook.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
The Elements of Style by Strunk and White.
Sushi. Seafood in general. Montreal bagels. Poutine if it's made right.
Red wine, especially syrah. Love wines from Washington state. Pinots from Oregon, New Zealand and Sonoma. Left bank Bordeaux.
The movie Stripes. Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, too.
Eclectic music. Love singer-songwriter style folk-rock. A quirky defunct Canadian band called Moxy Fruvous. The Rolling Stones. 70s R&B. 80s pop. Tears for Fears. Barenaked Ladies. New Order. Crosby Stills Nash & Young. Lady Gaga. Gefilte Joe and the Fish. Leonard Cohen. Frente.
The six things I could never do without
The outdoors.
At least one mountain near my home.
Friends.
Paper and a pen or pencil.
Great food (wholesome ingredients.)
Affection (in both directions.)
My passport and "trusted traveler" ID.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How to get things done despite the political vitriol that has emerged.
How to expand access to health care (this is part of my profession.)
Why so many people in the US (and especially in NYC) don't have enough healthy food to eat.
How I can reduce additives, chemicals, or other unhealthy ingredients in my food.
Where to find the best seafood in NYC.
What amazing history has occurred wherever I'm standing.
On a typical Friday night I am
Enjoying wine with friends in my neighborhood. Or recovering from a long week by enjoying some quiet time.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
That I followed a quirky Canadian rock band around for about three years. And I wasn't in college at the time.
