My self-summary
Okay I sort of abruptly fell off the face of the earth a while ago, but maybe it's time to come back to this thing? Here I go. Hi.

I've edited this self-summary about a million times and will never be satisfied with it, which says a lot about either my perfectionism or my narcissism. Anyways, I get that this exercise is more about self-presentation than anything else, so I'll just start talking, and maybe somewhere in my ramblings will be something that piques your interest. If not, hey, no hard feelings.
What I’m doing with my life
I moved up from San Diego in 2010...I'm from LA originally, but went down there to study philosophy, and after that didn't work out I spent a few years as a lab technician, mostly making people smell things for a living. Then I decided to give this grad school thing another shot (update: that didn't work out either :-/ ), so here I am.
I’m really good at
Logic games, languages, spotting dropped earrings, mixing delicious cocktails, misrepresenting my abilities on standardized tests, forgetting where I put my shoes. They were just here, I swear.

Things I'm working on getting better at: cooking, driving, teaching, conversation, having a designated place for my shoes.
The first things people usually notice about me
Like everyone who has ever tried to answer this question, I don't actually know what other people notice about me, but I get a fair number of comments on my hair, which is one of the three or so Easy and Socially Acceptable Traits to Comment On, so make of that what you will. My hair is more noticeable than my eyes; you heard it here first, folks.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
So, previously, I ignored the categories and instead described my favorite orchids, planet types, toes, and neurotransmitters. This is partly because I thought it was funny, partly as a snarky commentary on the superficiality of the profile questions, and partly because I can't ever decide what my favorite things are.
But since complaining about the questions is itself sort of an okcupid cliche, why not just play along and reductively label myself according to my most recent tastes in food and media? It'll be fun.

Anyways, here's some stuff I've enjoyed recently:

Authors: Alison Bechdel, Italo Calvino, Albert Camus, Patricia Churchland, Dashiell Hammett, George Lakoff, H.P. Lovecraft, China Miéville, Peter Milligan, Alan Moore, Lemony Snicket, Neal Stephenson, Oscar Wilde

Movies: Blade Runner, Clue, Lawrence of Arabia, Memento, Solaris, Star Trek II

Man I really don't watch much TV, but at various points in my life have been pretty into: Arrested Development, Babylon 5, Cowboy Bebop, Futurama, Mad Men, The Simpsons, Star Trek (esp. TNG), The West Wing

Music: Blondie, David Bowie, Deerhoof, The Delgados, Franz Ferdinand, The Go-Betweens, Lavender Diamond, Stephin Merritt, Janelle Monáe, Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, The Pixies, Queen, R.E.M., The Rolling Stones, Schubert, Scissor Sisters, The Supremes, Talking Heads, The Who

Food: Mexican, Japanese, Indian, shellfish, bacon, garlic, avocados, weird cheese, lemonheads
The six things I could never do without
My glasses, tasty food, a decent night's sleep, the Internet, my iPod, and ugh my phone.

This is not a very useful answer. "Hey, it turns out that I value comfort, diversions, and eyesight. Like-minded individuals are encouraged to message me."
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Emotion, politics, eudaimonia, self-improvement, obscure board games, meditation, science and technology, food, oncidiums, free will, the Museum of Jurassic Technology, Star Control, apophenia, and kittens.
On a typical Friday night I am
pretending I'm straight.

(Actually the only reason why I haven't updated my Official OKC Orientation Label to something a little more accurate is that I don't want to ruin the context for the above joke)
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I'm not this much of a smartass in real life. I'm probably being
so glib because I'm uneasy with the prospect of taking online
dating questions seriously?

[This is a lie, in real life MechaSaprophyte is the most
viciously catty bitch anyone's even heard of]

Also, kirapoms is in love with me.
She's kind of weird, but since she lives a continent away, I can deal.

Lastly, I am apparently willing to accept just about any profile
edit, perhaps to my detriment. [Then again, becoming profilepedia has its advantages.]

I’m looking for
  • Everybody
  • Ages 26–40
  • Near me
  • For new friends
You should message me if
You knew that the plural of "Pikachu" is, in fact, "Pikachu," and it distresses you that I've pluralized it otherwise.

...Heck, message away; I'm sort of on the fence about relationships as such, but I've met a few people off this site, and they've been nice, so maybe you would like to be friends, or just say hello? Saying hello is underrated.
