I honestly don't have much of an ear for music. People tell me I am
tone death. The result is that I tend to choose great lyrics over
great composition and/or execution--one of my favorite artists is
Bob Dylan. Awful singer I know, but he writes brilliant lyrics that
can be topical and important and downright amusing; sometimes at
the same time. That appeals to me.
Anime buff that I am
I have to mention at least one Anime movie that I love, and of all
the animated films I have seen, including the truly excellent works
from Pixar, "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind", by the legendary
Hayao Miyazaki, remains as my favorite animated film, and one of my
all time favorite films. The move is a tour de force of visual
creativity that creates a world so unique that it's impossible not
to be drawn in to it, add to that a compelling human story and a
more relevant than ever allegory on Man's relationship to the
Earth, and this post apocalyptic tale is truly special. For live
action movies, I especially like the works of Stanley Kubrick,
especially "Dr.Strangelove" and one of his less popular films,
"Barry Lyndon". That said, I am by no means a dedicated highbrow, I
gobble up action and martial arts movies ("Drunken Master" is a
favorite), and low brow comedy like the "Harold and Kumar"
films.
I read a fair amount of
Science Fiction, Asimov being my
favorite author, but "The Grapes of Wrath" stands as my favorite
novel. Steinbeck portrays life at its worst and humanity at its
best, anyone who wants to write post apocalyptic science fiction
could hold this book up as a shining example.
As for food I love anything that is made with care and skill and
quality ingredients; be it Coq au Vin, tako nigiri, or the
ubiquitous Burger and Fries.
