My self-summary
I shuttle back and forth between the UK, Frankfurt and Los Angeles and Boston, and am an English academic looking for intelligent company. I teach American literature and love to read and research, so I'm smart but very modest!
What I’m doing with my life
I'm trying to make it in German academia while also running a proofreading business for academics publishing their work in English. I live a pretty simple life pursuing my own passions, which do not include making money but do include the life of the mind (though not in the Barton Fink sense).
I am looking to meet someone who is sexy, intelligent and has a sense of humour. When I head to the US my favourite places are East and West coast, LA and SF and Boston, but the midwest strangely remains a mystery. I can't be too far from the sea hence the coastal obsession (I am writing a book entitled Madness and the Sea in the American Imagination, with Moby-Dick in the middle of it, of course, but there's any number of connections with other works, like Kerouac's On the Road, as they head across the States to the coast at SF). But I can render you senseless with utter interest with that topic another time. Over drinks at your favourite hangout perhaps! For me it is fun and friendliness first and then whatever else happens follows.
I’m really good at
Painting (it's a hobby), academic research (it's my job and I love it). Living a Thoreauvian existence (simple needs and means).
The first things people usually notice about me
My foppish hair makes me look like Hugh Grant. No, really. Am only 60 percent convinced this is a good thing. My English sense of humour also helps with this. I'm self-effacing and ironic, but in a good way. People also notice that I do not own a mobile phone. This is not going to change as it is my modest way of sticking it to "the man." The beard has gone now, by the way, but I keep it handy for emergencies.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Of the books I'd go with Moby-Dick, Nabokov's Lolita and Don DeLillo's White Noise. Favourite poets are William Carlos Williams, Ezra Pound, Elizabeth Bishop, Philip Larkin and August Kleinzahler. Films I love include Withnail and I, Big Lebowski, Heat, Full Metal Jacket. Musically I like a bit of Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead and going back a bit, Joy Division, Nirvana and further back Yes, Deep Purple, and even further back Mahler. Other things I turn to include stand-up comedians (especially when I'm feeling blue, which is every other Tuesday). I regularly watch youtube clips of Arj Barker, Steven Wright, Sarah Silverman, Eddie Izzard, Woody Allen, Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, Jimmy Carr, Bill Bailey. Also love (and miss) British comedy shows, such as Peep Show, Snuffbox, The Inbetweeners, The Office (even the German version is funny).
The six things I could never do without
A pen and paper, an internet connection at home. My sense of humour.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Why the short stories I get my classes to read always turn out to be rather dark. I think a lot about sex but that seems to be a default setting as a human, which is reassuring.
On a typical Friday night I am
at a favourite bar I head to when I need a break at the end of the week, or at the beginning, in the middle and possibly the in between days.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
This probably has something to do with the importance of masturbation (or as a Woody Allen character once defended it, sex with someone I love).
