My self-summary
I'm indecisive and like menus with only a few options. These open-ended essays will be the death of me! I'm pretty liberal and feel it's important to learn as much as you can about others, which feeds my desire to travel. I'm trying to do more volunteer work in my life...donating blood (when I haven't been traveling), working at food kitchens, going to Best Buddies' events, and playing with younger kids from a small school in SE DC. I enjoy dancing while I'm cooking. I like rules but don't always follow them. I'm great at starting projects and inspiring others but sometimes struggle with follow-through. I love to laugh, hug, and believe the world is a good place.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm a high school teacher who enjoys teaching biology but also loves some of the freedom it gives me to do other things - coach field hockey and help out with the school play (sewing) among other things. I also do some community theatre, which is exciting as this has always been a very important part of my life. I was involved in pantomimes from earlier than I remember, acted in elementary and high school, and minored in Theatre in college. I love acting (and am okay but it's been a while) and I think techies rock! To be a techie you can't be afraid of hard work or tedious work, and you also need to be creative and have a good sense of humour.

I love the outdoors and nature and feel grounded when I'm beneath a big sky. I enjoy camping although I swear the ground is getting harder! Day hikes, swimming, biking (a little) are all great. Still haven't mastered the art of being outdoors for too long in the cold, though. I struggle to imagine my kids not growing up with quite the same access to the wilderness that I had.

I've traveled quite a bit, having been born and bred in Zimbabwe with relatives scattered far and wide. I've been around North America, Central America (Costa Rica), western Europe, southern Africa, West Africa, and all around the UK (England, Wales and Scotland). I've just returned from New Zealand and Australia this past summer. I've managed to make it to a good 25 or more states, with highlights including the Badlands in SD, the spring azaleas in SC, and the scenery in NM. I think the more I see the more I feel the need to see. I don't think I've ever been anywhere ugly - there are so many different things that can make a place beautiful.

I watch too much TV but enjoy the break it gives me from the real world. Am working on my Masters and just have my major project to figure out. It's kicking my butt.
I’m really good at
Finding something special about each person I meet and get to know. I'm quite chatty and I think I have a friendly demeanor (I always get asked for directions, normally when I'm not in an area I know well!). Oh! And finding two-letter words in Scrabble.
The first things people usually notice about me
Accent...it's a good conversation starter but I'm really just a regular person underneath that!
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
TV: Firefly, Doctor Who, British sitcoms (Yes, Minister., As Time Goes By, and many more), The Big Bang Theory, NCIS, Bones, Medium
Books: Little Women (Alcott), Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight (Fuller), The Prophet (Gibran), Dirty Beasts (Dahl), To Kill a Mockingbird (Lee), just read How to Ditch Your Fairy (and would quite like to have a parking fairy) (Larbalestier)
Movies: Tsotsi, The Power of One, In Bruges (hilarious!),...I like most things from chick flicks through indie films but have difficulty with straight horror movies
Music: Rock, Pop, 80s, some Rap, will listen to most things...some favourites include Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Amanda Marshall, Vanessa Carleton
Food: Thai, Indian, Malaysian...will give most things a try, so have done the frogs' legs and even a mopane worm (look that up!)
The six things I could never do without
Friends, family, fruit, Skype, um...and two more things?
I spend a lot of time thinking about
My friends. How to procrastinate doing my grading. Now that I have my green card, how is it really going to change my life.
On a typical Friday night I am
At home. Watching TV/movies on my computer. Having dinner or drinks with friends. Recovering from my week. Volunteering at a school event. Teching a show. Playing a board game. Working out at the gym.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I go to church nearly every Sunday and enjoy the community I have there. We have a lesbian rector, which I think is fantastic! I'm very open to all religions and love learning more about others. While this is important to me, I don't feel my partner needs to share the same beliefs I have.
