My self-summary
"'A life, Jimmy. You know what that is? It's the shit that happens while you're waiting for moments that never come."
- Lester Freamon, The Wire

I like science and science fiction, especially Doctor Who (Girl let me show you my... DVD of The Keys of Marinus and we'll watch the special features interviews with members of the original cast and crew alllllll night long). I make delicious food and awful puns. I'm naturally a bit reclusive but I've been making a conscious effort to socialise and engage with people more and it seems to be paying off.
What I’m doing with my life
Working part-time in neuromuscular research, and starting a full-time Masters as soon as the academic chaos of The Big Move settles down. It's challenging but really rewarding and I absolutely love it. I also do a few shifts a week at the concierge desk of a hotel.

As a new year's resolution I've started taking writing much more seriously and for the first time in my life I don't hate every word I produce. It turns out the secret to that is to just tell the story my way and not try to sound like anyone else! Who'd have guessed?

The rest of my free time is a mix of reading, cooking, catching up with my family, hanging out with friends, or just goofing around on the internet.

Long-term goals are to work full-time in research and buy a house some day. Short-term goals are to pay off my car loan, socialise more and get enough sleep (doing pretty well with the sleep thing when I don't have night shifts :[ )
I’m really good at
Cooking/Baking

Bad puns
Science (I hope)

Safely driving a forklift
The first things people usually notice about me
My height. I'm tall, but not really "WOW that guy is tall!" tall. And probably my accent? It's a sort of Irish-English-Aussie blend that I inherited from my parents despite living in Perth all my life. Also, I instinctively walk quietly so sometimes I sneak up on people by accident. I guess in those cases the first thing they notice is that I'm THERE AT ALL WHOA JESUS I SPILLED MY DRINK.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Cat's Cradle, Lord Jim, Rendezvous With Rama, Small Gods,
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, Dracula, The Selfish Gene, The
Mote In God's Eye, The Phantom of the Opera. I'm reading Red Mars right now and it's really good so far.

Movies: 2001 - A Space Odyssey, The Blues Brothers, The Castle,
Inception, The Avengers

Shows: DOCTOR WHO, The Wire, Torchwood (yeah I know), Misfits, Game of Thrones, Babylon 5.

Music: Loads of different stuff, but I'm particularly into the more melodic kinds of dance/electro - Daft Punk, Justice, Cut Copy, The Avalanches, Bag Raiders.

Food: Anything that's not too spicy! I only cook vegetarian food but I eat meat the rest of the time.
The six things I could never do without

Coffee
A good book to read
Word processing software
At least one lie-in per week :)
Making people laugh (I think it's the meaning of life)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Usually some kind of problem-solving, whether it's to do with my job or in my own life. I also think about Doctor Who. Like, a lot.
On a typical Friday night I am
If I'm not working I'll be out to dinner with my Dad, as is our tradition. I might stay up late or go out afterwards though.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have chronic depression and anxiety but for the most part I control them. Sometime's my brain's like "Isn't everything meaningless yet also really scary?" but I'll be all "FUCK YOU I'M TOO OLD FOR THIS SHIT" and elbow it in the face.

FUN FACT: According to Wikipedia, "...[L]orem ipsum is placeholder text (filler text) commonly used to demonstrate the graphics elements of a document or visual presentation". It is also handy for people who wish to have 1000 words in their profile without yammering on about themselves forever and ever. Eodem modo typi, qui nunc nobis videntur parum clari, fiant sollemnes in futurum, and see if I don't!
