My Notes edit
My self-summary
I read, draw, paint, write, program, and hang out my fellow human beings for fun. My interests are broad, my experiences are broad, and I tend not to talk about my work/research unless prompted or ranting (mainly because droning on = boring, and ranting tends to be high speed and topical so that's safe ;) )...
My sense of humor is a little dark and off the wall besides being relatively pervasive throughout my character, but I do love serious conversation as well (and have been known to be capable of lecturing in a classroom setting without a stream of ADD-style jokes and interludes) ... :)
What I'm doing with my life
I'm considering a doctorate, but not right away. I am taking the Foreign Service Exam in Nov '09. My aim is to help policymakers make better informed decisions about Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern foreign policy. Well, or at least more educated mistakes.
I've done a lot of work on Egypt - Israel - United States and I'm considering writing a book after graduation that examines US decisions in relation to the Egypt-Israel rivalry and in the context of the Cold War. I won't go into detail because this is probably boring to 99% of you.
I used to draw a lot of comics and have even recently started back at it when the inclination has struck me, I occasionally have running "strips" with a character (Professor Nerdy [me], The Loneliest Tentacle, Uggles the Sensitive Orc)... it is my hope when I graduate to touch up some of my more amusing works and try to get them published. Unfortunately, the content of these is typically regarded as "depressing" to most people, but I find it funny, sooooo...
I'm really good at
(the drawback is I am what my friends have called a fixer, I have this habit of assuming people who explain a situation in detail want help as well as sympathy... in other words, I'm sort of a typical male in this regard... oops?)
I also have a very, very strong sense of intuition. I can generally sort things out on that alone, provided I don't let my imagination start running away with the show. I get feelings when something bad is going to happen a lot of the time... and perhaps that means I psych myself into something bad happening, but who knows. That's a question for the philosophers.
I'm really good, sometimes, at being a complete dork by accident.
Speaking of being a dork, I'm good at making up my own slang that I use around friends. It's fun.
I'm also a reasonably decent cook and a superfine mixer of adult beverages.
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me
I've also heard I look like Lenin (or so the nickname for me around the History department would suggest)...
I also "talk funny" to some extent. I talk rather like I write, I'm somewhat soft-spoken but extremely verbose and my word choice is sometimes potentially awkward to absolutely absurd. My international friends use this as an opportunity to brush up on English, so I guess it serves some purpose.
I also have the fashion sense of Helen Keller. It's true. I consistently mix business and casual attire without thinking. My color matching has gotten better since I tend to wear colors that invoke Maoist sentiments.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Music: New Order, The Get Up Kids, Depeche Mode, Counting Crows, The Aquabats, REM, Enya, TMBG, Moby, Mates of State, Belle and Sebastian, Iron and Wine, Baskervilles, The Strokes, Feist, Eighteenth Day of May, Hooverphonic, Kahoots, Sing-Sing, Voxtrot, Maritime, The Arcade Fire, Old 97's, Tokyo Police Club, Matt Pond PA, Panic! At the Disco
(This isn't all of what I listen to, but I like a lot by these folks)
Movies: Lord of the Rings (I know, BIG surprise), The Matrix, Star Wars, 12 Monkeys, Get Shorty, Real Genius, Fight Club, Happy Gilmore, Young Frankenstein
Television: Lost, X-Files, Babylon 5, Arrested Development, Monk, MST3K, Heroes, Jericho, The Office, Monty Python (the show more than the films)
(It should be noted that I don't really watch TV... on TV anyway)
Books: Good Lord. Uhm. Thinking about reading invokes panic, as I have read at least 30,000 pages of books/articles this year. When I could read for fun, I read a lot of memoirs/non-fiction, some William Gibson (cyberpunk at its finest), many of the classics (some of which I even liked), Shakespeare... I'm sure I'll get back into the swing of things, too... and move on to some more fun once I have the time.
(Note: The last book I read for fun was on cryptology, it explained how to do all sorts of different ciphers that have been used by royalty/etc.)
Oh and as for food: I can eat pizza for all of eternity. Maybe even eternity plus one.
The six things I could never do without
2. Food
3. Oxygen
4. Water
5. Sunlight
6. a good pizza once in awhile
I spend a lot of time thinking about
I am, for better or worse, a sensitive sort who takes the issues of the world very seriously even if I try (poorly, at times) to make light of everything. As a result of my course of study (both history and foreign policy) ... I know too much about how people treat each other to try to be too serious all the time!
On a typical Friday night I am
The most private thing I'm willing to admit here
... er, and I still use it to take notes.
(I have taught it to some of my best friends over the years, but it's likely only one of them can still read it ;) )
You should message me if
If you don't, obviously you shouldn't. No one has a gun to your head... and if they do, well, I didn't send them, I swear.
