My self-summary
My name's Collin, and I'm a
law student. If there's not a twelve
step program for that, there really should be. Don't let it fool
you, though. I still have a soul. They don't make you hand those
over until at least the second semester of year two. My friends and
family are the most important part of my life. I choose to stay in
Lansing, MI because everybody in the world I care about is here. As
it stands, I'd stay here if I can but I'm not sure I'll be able to,
with the way things are. I love music. I play my guitar nearly
every day. And, I sing. (Less now than I used to, thanks to the
"busy" thing.) I also love dogs. I want to get a great big dog
someday when I'm not too busy to walk him. (Or her, whatever.) I'm
not the biggest party boy on the planet. I'm more comfortable at
home watching a movie than in some loud bar. It's not that I never
go out. I do. And I have fun. I've just not one of those "drink
till you fall down because it's Tuesday" types. I'm past it. I
chose law school because I like helping people with their problems.
I thought briefly of being a counselor because you are able to help
people through the roughest times of their lives. Lawyers get to do
that too. Make no mistake, when people come to a lawyer with a
problem, it can be severely and personally distressing to them. A
counselor would talk to them it that situation. Make them feel
better. Lawyers get to talk to them, make them feel better, and
then go and kick the ass of whoever was hurting them. Make them cry
through their wallet. That's a lot more me.
What I'm doing with my life
Figuring out the next step. I go to class and I work at a small law
firm out of East Lansing. Obviously, I'm going to end up doing
something law related. Though, I'm hesitant to do anything with it
that isn't going to allow me to have a personal life. You know
those lawyers who hate their lives and wish they'd never went to
law school? The ones with lonely wives and kids who don't recognize
them? That's not going to be me.
I'm really good at
Playing
guitar.
Singing. Earning the trust and affection of children and dogs. In
the business world, I'm also a sharp negotiator. I can be their
worst nightmare if they try to pull one over on me. I'm also a good
and, I hope, loyal friend.
The first thing(s) people usually notice about me
I'm sharp and very direct. I'm not at all shy about letting people
know exactly what I think. My boss of five years once told me "I
always keep an ear to the floor with the others in the office in
case someone's messing jerking them around and I have to step in.
You, I don't worry about because I know you're tenacious enough
that you can take care of it." The trouble is, it has the effect, I
think, of making people think I am insensitive. I'm really not. The
fact that I'm not is, I hope, the second thing they notice about
me. Though, I do have a talent for saying the wrong thing at times.
(Sorry Ann)
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Books: Lunar Park by Brett Easton Ellis, Fear and Loathing in Las
Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson, The Beach by Alex Garland, A Brave New
World by Aldous Huxley, It and The Stand by Stephen King. Movies:
Eddie and the Cruisers, Goodfellas, Fightclub, Casino, Heat,
Trainspotting. Basically, anything with explosions, fight scenes,
or gangsters makes me a happy guy. I also like lame horror movies
if the occasion is right. George Romero zombie flicks, the Evil
Dead series. Evil Ed remains my favorite B movie of all time.
Music: I used to major in music, before it occurred to me I wanted
to eat and I got a finance degree. (Jury's still out on whether
that was a good idea or not.) This list could get pretty long. I
look for anything that moves me. I love classic rock. Led Zepplin,
Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix. I also love modern rock. Radiohead,
Lifehouse. My favorite songs include: 3 Libras by A Perfect Circle,
Nothing Else Matters by Metallica, High and Dry by Radiohead, Let
it Be by the Beatles, Anything for Love by Meatloaf. Food: "Dead
and warm?" I like Breakfast at 3:00 AM, Sushi, Chicken Caesar
Salads, Mancino's Pizza Grinders, Claddaugh Irish Pub's Fish and
Chips (with a Great Big Guinness), Wendy's Taco Salads.
The six things I could never do without
Food, shelter, oxygen? My
guitar really is the only material thing
that is absolutely irreplaceable to me. The rest of it can burn.
Now, if we're going non-material things.... Music, intellectual
stimulation, a sense of purpose, a sense of belonging, hope.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
What that next step is.
On a typical Friday night I am
Hanging out at some dive bar with my best friend and his wife, who
is also my friend.
The most private thing I'm willing to admit here
I have a very deep, private, personal difficulty that I will admit
to for this question: I find it very difficult to make private
admissions on the internet.
You should message me if
I'm looking for somebody I can connect with. To me, that means
finding someone I can't get enough of talking to. If that sounds
like something you're into, I'd like to hear from you.
