Namely: That's a good answer.  But i think its more of a power thing.  They are like: if i'm mean and show people that I can hurt them emotionally then they will fear and respect me and ill gain power over them.  If that's true its pathetic because there are better ways to demonstrate power. Money and connections are the the most obvious, but there are subtle ways to influence people that don't involve anything material (profound intellectual thought, influential and provocative art.)  Women who are unusually and unnecessarily mean don't have the ability to achieve powerful positions through those socially acceptable methods, so they resort to cruelty as a means of intimidating and therefore dominating the people around them (especially insecure ones)  It creates the delusion that they have a higher more respected position among their associates.  Usually, when somebody (usually a man of substance) who actually has real power confronts them, or more likely ignores them the are crushed and become even more bilious to those with whom they do interact.  That is one possible answer.

other explanations: a rush, its fun, parents were mean (genetic predisposition + enviornmental factors) attention. They must compensate for the wound between their legs which makes them the fairer sex by demonstrating greater emotional strength in coldness.  daddy didn't love them..i could go on but ill stop..each case is probably different.

Im going to cut your tounge out and nail it to the chapel door.
