My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I'm a former Marine, and a gigantic geek. These two things strongly shape my personality. I'm generally pretty easygoing; after having people try to kill me with high explosives I have trouble seeing anything less as something I should get worked up over. I am a bit of a smartass, but it's always meant to be humorous.

I'm originally from Fairbanks, Alaska, but also spent a lot of time growing up in Sacramento, California and went to college for my bachelors in Portland, Oregon. I decided I was really tired of getting rained on, so once I graduated I moved out here and am loving it so far. My parents have retired out here as well, so unless I get a dream job offer somewhere else I'm planning on staying in the Mountain West region for the extreme long term.

I don't own a dog (yet) due to renting, but I like most of them better than I like most people. I mostly stick to a vegan diet, but I'm non-judgemental about those who make other choices with their own food.

I think the most important things in a relationship are trust and communication, and the most attractive things in a woman are intelligence and competence.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I work full time as an engineer, and I'm a part-time grad student at UNM working on my Masters in Mechanical Engineering.

Ideally, I would like to build robots that go into space and mine asteroids or build stuff from material mined from asteroids. I'll probably just have to settle for building robots that may go into space one day.

I'm currently trying to get back in shape, the goal is to run the Marine Corps Marathon in 2013. I recently finished a half marathon, and I'm working towards the MCM in October.

I'm also working on improving my (abysmal) Spanish and French.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
From the Marines: shooting, swimming, SCUBA diving, handling stressful situations calmly, and finding the humor in being miserable.

From college: math, programming, math, writing, math, physics, math, staying up late finishing work, and math.

I also play classical violin (since three and a half,) have a decent voice (church choir growing up, school choir in high school,) am a fount of random useless knowledge (did you know that Grace Kelley retired from being a mid-1950s actress to become the princess of Monaco?), and enjoy cooking. Right now I brew my own beer and bake my own bread, I'm working on making my own (fake, and supposedly MUCh better than the storebrands) artisan cheese.

I pick up damn near everything pretty quickly, with the exception of art. I took some classes back in the day, but it just resulted in slightly more realistically posed stick figures.

Oh, I hear I give good massages. I have really strong hands from all the violin, so if you need jars open or like your massages firm, I'm your guy.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Either the above mentioned random facts, or that I tend to free associate all the time. So someone might say something about smurfs, which will get me thinking about the color blue, which will get me thinking about blueberries, which will remind me that my mom has a new blueberry-rhubarb pie recipe, which I'll mention, and then people look at me funny because I guess it's odd to mention pie when someone is talking about smurfs.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
Books: Where the Red Fern Grows, Hatchet, American Gods, The Malazan Book of the Fallen (series), Mining the Sky, The Veganomicon.

Movies: Braveheart, Red Dawn, Tommy Boy, Supertroopers, Moulin Rouge, Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones 1 & 3, The Mummy, Aliens, The Fog of War, Charlie Wilson's War.

Shows: I don't own a TV, so I rarely watch any shows. But The Wire is the best television ever made.

Music: Eclectic. I mostly listen to NPR in the car, but modern rock and classic rock is a close second, with rap slightly behind that. Preferably something Tupac-ish. I like theater, so I also listen to a lot of show tunes. When I'm working I prefer quiet jazz in the background, as I can't concentrate if it's too fast paced or has words.

Food: I really love spicy food, especially Thai or Indian. Pretty much the only stuff I don't like is anything with a really slimy/spongy texture (large amounts of mushrooms, badly prepared tofu, etc) and heavily fried stuff.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.

I guess I get to pick 5 more. Books, running water, computers, friends and family, and dogs.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Space exploration, homework, wondering what people see in reality TV, and what I would do if I was suddenly attacked by zombies.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Every other Friday I get together with some friends and play tabletop roleplaying games (like D&D, but not actually D&D.) On the other Friday I'm probably at a party or bar with some friends, at home watching a movie with a book open and a glass of whiskey, or tinkering on my latest DIY project.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
When I die I want to be frozen. You know those wackos that get themselves turned into corpsicles on the off chance that they can be thawed out someday in the future? Yeah, I'm one of them. I figure if it doesn't work, I'm still dead, and it's not like I'll be using the money for anything else. And how cool would it be to set foot on another planet, or see a sun besides Sol break the horizon?

I sound "entertainingly weird."
