My Notes edit

My self-summary

I'm originally from the midwest, and am one of those rare people who moved to Chambana for a job and not any affiliation with the university. I work as an illustrator (it's the best job in the world) and in addition to art, I have a passion for all things biology, especially paleontology and evolution. I like to sit and think about phylogeny, which is more than a little geeky. In the long term I want to expand my portfolio of paleo art so I can do more of that freelance, and write a book on how to illustrate evolution.

What I'm doing with my life

Even though I've been here a year now, I still sort of feel I'm in a transition period. As homesick as I am for Canada (where I went to graduate school), I LOVE my job. I can't believe I get paid for it.

The great thing about my job is, once I'm working purely by freelance, I can live just about wherever I want, but for now I am comfortable where I am and enjoying the stability of that monthly paycheck.

I'm really good at

creative things. I paint, draw, make jewelry, sculpt, write fiction, and build stuff out of Legos. (And don't come telling me that I can't pluralize it that way!) I only regret not having enough time in the day to make all my ideas reality. I'm also really good at wasting time, unfortunately. And I start many more projects than I ever finish.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

My height. Maybe my eye color, since green is rather unusual. In Toronto people noticed how very white I am, but that's not so unusual here. Back in ND I'm about as average as one gets! In fact, once I was tutoring an ESL student from China, and while on the phone with her before we met, she asked "how will I know you? What do you look like?" and I said "I look ... like everyone else here!" and she laughed and laughed! But when I went to Boston, someone asked me what part of Sweden I was from, so I guess the first thing people notice depends on where I am at the time.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books - on science, biology, skepticism, sci-fi. I don't have as much time for reading as I would like. I just read "Julie" on the train ride home after Xmas, which is the sequel to one of my very favorite childhood books, "Julie of the Wolves." The sequel didn't live up to the original, but it was nice to revisit the characters after 20 years.

Movies - I have a very eclectic taste. I like to rent movies that I know have had good reviews while knowing nothing else about them. Recently I've enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth, Apocalypto, the Simpsons movie, Garden State, and Cloverfield. I just can't say no to a good monster flick! One of these days I'm going to watch Cloverfield and The Mist back-to-back. I've also watched the entire Lord of the Rings Trilogy (extended edition) in a single day. In fact, I threw a LotR party and invited a few friends. It was a blast.

My favorite TV shows, even though I don't have cable, are Corner Gas (great Canadian sitcom), Bullshit, Futurama, Battlestar, and Firefly.

Music - eclectic again but I've been really into indie rock lately, especially Coldplay. Other favorite bands of mine include Death Cab for Cutie, Keane, The Verve, Radiohead, U2, and most recently Vampire Weekend and Sleepercar. Most of these bands for whatever reason have bald drummers, and I'm not sure why.

I also really dig listening to movie scores. Sometimes I just need music with no lyrics. They're especially good for working out story ideas.

Food - Asian food! All sorts. Except sushi. Because it's cold. Also I'm not terribly big on seafood, but I do like certain fish, especially walleye when I can get it. Best thing about moving to Illinois is you have some awesome pizza here. I love to cook, especially pastas and stir fry.

OKcupid doesn't want to know what my favorite animal is, but you should know it's the Gemsbok. And my favorite dinosaur is Oviraptor philoceratops.

The six things I could never do without

1 - My bike. I love my bike more than a person should love any inanimate object. We once took on the busy streets of Toronto, now I commute to work each day, taking advantage of the many one-way streets.

2 - Arts & crafts supplies. Blank paper, canvases, X-acto blades, brushes, clay, wire, needle-nose pliers, apoxy, aluminum tubing, paint, colored pencils, rapidiographs, etc.

3 - My iMac. Though that could count as part of number 2 since it's mostly a CS3 machine that also does other things like internet and music. So number 3 is actually my iTunes collection of 634 songs, 132 of them Coldplay. Obsessive? I'll admit to that. Happily!

4- Dark chocolate, preferably with some sort of fruity center.

5 - Netflix. I'm a walking ad for Netflix. I love it.

6 - My mom's advice. Last but definitely not least.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

ideas. For drawings... for stories... most of the time when I'm not thinking about whatever it is I'm supposed to be doing, that's what I'm thinking about. My dreams are in the 3rd person most of the time. Is that unusual?

I've been spending way too much time lately /worrying/ about various things. I need to break that habit. Worrying is bad for creativity.

On a typical Friday night I am

at home, eating popcorn and watching movies with my cats. Or maybe on the internets, or doodling in Photoshop while listening to music. I never do anything productive on Friday nights.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I fear blindness more than death. And I'm very squeamish when it comes to anything involving eyes or eyeballs, which is odd considering my profession and the fact that I'm awfully desensitized when it comes to most other things. Let me tell you some stories from medical school!

You should message me if

you also get kind of excited when it first starts to get really cold out, even though you know by January you'll already be completely sick of winter.
