I am affable, easygoing, and sometimes even witty.

My Self-Summary

I'm a Michigan guy transplanted to New York. I'm a Starbucks addict. I love Chinese food. I love reading books on science, religion, and philosophy. I'm approximately 93% meat.

I'm slightly introverted with new people, but once I get to know you I tend to warm up pretty quickly. I'd like to think that I'm bright and witty, though sometimes people don't get my references or my jokes go over their heads entirely. I can be pretty sarcastic, but I don't use sarcasm to cut people down. I keep a positive outlook and don't let the minor annoyances or setbacks keep me from enjoying life.

What I’m doing with my life

Working for a nuclear propulsion research lab, exercising like a fool, absorbing books, watching good TV, meeting new people. Spending way too much time being a geek. Pushing my boundaries and trying to expand my comfort zone. Doing a podcast.

I’m really good at

Making new friends, cooking (if you give me a recipe), working with electronics, doing math & science, being skeptical, singing, and writing. Playing video games. Starting trouble in small, manageable quantities.

The first things people usually notice about me

Nobody can seem to figure out what my ethnicity is. I'm mysterious in an entirely useless way.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Dean Koontz, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Godless, The God Delusion, Bertrand Russell, Bart D. Ehrman, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens. Give me any cyberpunk books like Neuromancer or Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep - nearly anything by William Gibson or Philip K. Dick - and I'll gobble them up like candy.
Movies: I really don't have a lot of favorites. I just like movies; mostly sci-fi, fantasy, drama, and comedy. The occasional romance is okay. I guess my favorite genre would be zombie movies. I love me some zombies.
Music: Sigur Rós, Radiohead, Mogwai, Björk, Guster, Iron & Wine, Menomena, The Flaming Lips, Muse, Cursive, Mew, Avenged Sevenfold, Senses Fail, Opeth, Dimmu Borgir... dozens of bands. I'm a music junkie. My tastes can be kind of eclectic and bizarre. I tend to like indie, hard rock, ambient, electronica, some black/death metal, and the occasional hardcore/emo band. I'll listen to anything once. I had a country music kick in high school and that left some scars that I'm still trying to recover from.
Food: Most American-style Chinese food. It's so bad for me, and yet so delicious. I also spend entirely too much money on vanilla chai lattes from Starbucks. I like to cook for myself on occasion, though I've never tested my cooking skills on others (so it may not be safe to experiment).

The six things I could never do without

Music, podcasts, exercise, caffeine, the Internet, and video games. If I can enjoy these things with other people, great; if not, that's okay. (Only six? That's awfully limited. I guess that's a test of our creativity...)

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Religion, politics, philosophy, science and pseudoscience, education, and current events. They tend to weave their way into anything else I think about. Yeah, I'm a bit obsessed. But I'm always trying to figure out more and more about what makes people tick.

On a typical Friday night I am

Either staying in with a good movie, going out to the bar with friends, or figuring out other ways to enjoy myself. As long as it doesn't get me arrested, make me a pariah to the community, or leave me permanently disfigured, I'll probably be okay with it.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm an atheist. But that's gradually becoming less private. So... I don't know. I'm not a very private person. My life is slathered all over the internet, in various places.

You should message me if

You've got a warm laugh and a ready smile, and a lot going on upstairs. If you've got a quirky or offbeat sense of humor, even better. If you can laugh at things most people consider inappropriate... awesome.
