The psychological implications of this tale are astounding and yet it pervades out society so deeply that children are raised hearing countless variations of the same theme. Men are supposed to prove their love for a woman by saving her from her personal demons, meanwhile women are supposed to be chaste until that right man comes along. This myth does neither gender any favors and yet somehow it persists.
I would like to consider myself a modern knight-errant, though certainly not a prince. Though I believe in today's society what this means is something very different. I prove my love for another by first proving my love for myself. I fight my own dragons and work towards breaking my own curses. I cannot break the evil spell put on you, but what I can do is walk with you and stand beside you as you face your own dragon.
I cannot save someone else. I learned that lesson the hard way. But I have slain dragons and I am ready to slay more. So let us fight side by side because working together, no evil power in the land could stop us. Do not be my damsel. Be my partner and I will be yours. Together we will show the world what a real happily ever after looks like.
