My Notes edit

My self-summary

I don't talk much about myself, not because I'm opposed necessarily, but it seems weird and vain. Besides, all that stuff should come--and I refuse to say organically--but essentially, yes, organically, out of discussions about other stuff. Also, I'm not sure my self-awareness has reached a point where I could neatly summarize it. So there. I'm taking the easy way out, but I'll pretend that it's because mysteriousness is cool.

Other than that, I'll go out of my way to discuss good movies and books, and I have no trouble listening.

I like science fiction and would fight with literary snobs over The Left Hand of Darkness. Actually, I'll fight with literary snobs over just about anything, just because I like to argue. This also includes film snobs, music snobs, and snob snobs.

What I'm doing with my life

I don't even know what I'm doing for the day when I wake up, let alone what I'm doing with my life. At the moment, I'm taking a gap year from the University of Washington and working a boring job that affords me a lot of grief with little reward but the few responsibilities I actually have.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

Since I started letting it grow out, it's been my hair.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Catch-22, American Gods, and Othello probably top the list at the moment. It depends on the day what I consider my favorite. Ursula K. Le Guin, Neil Gaiman, Ray Bradbury, and J.G. Ballard are my favorite authors, though, and I would read anything they've written.

Movies: I will watch any Alfred Hitchcock movie. If I had to pick a favorite child, it would probably be Rope. I also love Quentin Tarantino and David Fincher. (Fight Club is the movie that made me care about movies; Zodiac, though, has taken that coveted position of "favorite David Fincher flick.") I love Pixar and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and the chase scene in Bullitt might be my favorite. Nothing scares me more than Cube and I will defend to the death every M. Night Shyamalan film made and do it well. I love classic Hollywood; I love contemporary Hollywood; I love foreign films.

Music: For six years Sparta has been my favorite band, but I also love The Field Mice, Keane, The Beatles, The Coral Sea, Wintersleep, Yellow6, Mando Diao, The Boy Least Likely To, The Zombies, Voxtrot, The Helio Sequence, The Little Ones, and Say Hi. Among others too numerous to count. Also, I love music from the '50s and the '60s. And classic rock. '80s music is hit or miss and I think the '90s exist as some sort of void, because I'm not much into anything from then.

TV: The Twilight Zone, Stargate: Atlantis, Doctor Who, Boston Legal, Torchwood, Sports Night, Farscape, How I Met Your Mother, QI, House MD, The West Wing.

Food: I will try just about anything. I love all sorts of food. Also, gin. Though gin isn't really a food so much as it is a drink.

The six things I could never do without

+ Feminism
+ Physics
+ Someone to talk to
+ My iPod, as much as it shames me to say
+ Solitude
+ Every film that's been made by a crew that believed in it

And a super-special bonus thing I could never do without--and this is a new one, I didn't even know it existed--is (drumroll, please) politics. Sometime between the DNC and now, I became addicted to politics. It's a little shameful, really, but it's serving me well with all the dirt that's gotten released now that the election's over with.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

I like to consider the fate of the universe. This goes back to my childhood when I watched some weekend kid's show about astronomy and ended up having nightmares for a month over the fact that the sun would die at some point in the future. I worried a great deal about this. I don't anymore, because cosmology presents so many cool options that I can't help but be excited about a far future I won't have any part of.

Now that President-elect Obama is President-elect Obama and no longer Senator Obama, I waste quite a bit of time thinking about his cabinet appointments. Seriously, post-election season this time around is an absolute treat for me.

On a typical Friday night I am

Until January, I am probably home watching Stargate: Atlantis. Or at a friend's house. Or in a movie theater.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

When I was very little, I very nearly stole one of those Care Bears hard-cover books, but at the last minute didn't do it. I haven't tried shoplifting since that time.
