My Notes edit

My self-summary

Hi, everyone. I'm here partly out of curiousity, partly out of the desire to meet new people. I'm the father of three young ones, and the owner of three cats, two fish, one puppy, and a snake.

I'm average in height, and build, and weight. I have curly brown hair and blue/green/grey eyes. Right now I have a boring bureaucratic job, but before that I was a schoolteacher, and a restauranteur before that.

I grew up as the son, grandson, and nephew of scientists, and it kind of stuck. I'm very curious, and sometimes a bit impatient. I love sci-fi, though I'm starting to get into historical fiction, thanks to Bernard Cornwell.

I grew up and have lived my whole live in Pennsylvania, save for a few months after college when I was in Ohio. Vacations are spent in Maine, though I'd love to see Europe. I've never been there.

I live near Philadelphia, but work in Alexandria, VA. Yes, I know it's crazy. I only mention it because I'm looking for friends in either area.
I'm sure I'll find more to add later.....

What I'm doing with my life

What am I doing with my life? Fighting to keep it. In March, I was diagnosed with ALS, which stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It's better known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease". It's pretty much consumed and overshadowed everything else right now.

I'm sure I'll add more here later, when my mind is in a better mood for it.

I'm really good at

Juggling.

Writing.

Decorating cakes.

Cooking.

Getting absorbed in a book.

Editing other peoples' writings.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

My hair. Somehow I've always been defined by it. It's really curly, and even though I might know I need it cut, it is usually several weeks before I get around to it. And my hair doesn't grow down. It grows out. Think Michael Jackson, age 5.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Oh, gosh, where to start? I really enjoyed Stephen King's "Gunslinger" series, so much so that I found myself slowing down in the end of the last book, trying to drag it out, not wanting it to end. I'm also a big fan of Asimov. Terry Pratchett, of course. I went through a Dean Koontz phase, followed by a Clive Cussler phase, but I think I'm over both. I've read a couple of Robert Ludlam works, and I liked what I read. Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, Robert Heinlein, Dan Simmons, Douglas Adams, Ray Bradbury, George R. R. Martin...basically, if it's fiction, I'll read it. As far as movies are concerned, it's easier to list what I don't like. I don't like horror, I don't like chick flicks (usually. Sleepless in Seattle was good.), I don't like anime (except for Mira...Mika...what's his name, the guy who did Spirited Away), and I generally don't like period pieces (again, there are exceptions, like Braveheart). Monty Python, Mel Brooks. Star Wars goes without saying (episodes 4-6, again without saying). Indiana Jones, anything by Pixar. Firefly & Serenity.I love going to the movies, and I'm not above sneaking in to see a double feature.

The six things I could never do without

Books, friends, beef, fresh-squeezed orange juice, springtime, milk chocolate, writing implements, my kids. Not necessarily in that order.

Oh, did it say "six"? Tough.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

ALS, friends I haven't seen in a long time, friends I haven't seen in a short time, my grandparents.

On a typical Friday night I am

Home. Every other week or so, several of us gather for game night. It's often poker (hold 'em), but it may also be Settlers of Catan, this pirate game that Wizards of the Coast created, Monopoly, or whatever else we happen to pull off the shelf that night.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

Even though I can't sing out loud, I sing in my head.

My most common daydream involves the ability to fly.
