My self-summary

Self-Summary in Several Stanzas

'Twas evening, and the plastic keys
Did click and clack at rapid pace:
Tapping "W" in threes,
To bring me to this curious place.

"Beware the matching site," they said,
"The strangers' eyes, the stalkers' gaze!
Beware the ID thieves, and shun
The internet's strange malaise!"

I took my trusty mouse in hand:
Long time this social site I sought --
Now on myself I will expand,
And write a summary careful wrought.

I work in art and web design,
With strange B.A. in English Lit,
I'm here for love and friends to find,
With similar interests and charming wit!

I drink deep of conversations
On many geeky things diverse,
And drink I too some choice libations --
Social only, not the adverse.

Cats and dogs I fondly love --
They're cute and fun for romping play --
But curse my allergies thereof,
I ofttimes have to stay away.

Right ear deaf from infant ills,
I hear the world but half, you know:
I often wonder how it feels
To sense all things in stereo.

Though my degree's in English Lit,
I gave four years to ASL:
And though I loved it quite a bit,
I bade the language fond farewell.

So now you know me just a bit,
My hope is that you will take note,
And by email you will remit
A kind response to what I wrote.

J'ai français un peu-- je l'étudié a l'université-- mais maintenant, je suis très mal. Répondez en anglais s'il vous plaît?

What I'm doing with my life

Although I spent most of college studying linguistics and American Sign Language in an attempt to develop a practical writing system for ASL, I finished with a B.A. in English Literature. So of course I wound up doing graphic art and web design for Fortune 500 companies through a major travel company. Confused? Me too.

Unexpected as it is, it's a dream job that I can mostly do in my head. The office is in the north of Atlanta and I'm in the south of Atlanta, so I'm considering moving closer to downtown. Currently I work from home three days a week, so the commute isn't a killer. And I enjoy being paid to relax by my fire with a laptop.

I'm really good at

I play guitar and sing-- badly, but I don't care. Also, I'm good at picking things up and putting them back down again.

I'm probably good at other things as well, but answering this question without sounding like a raging egomaniac isn't one of them.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

I have no idea. What did you notice first?

I write how I speak, and I think I speak oddly about odd things. That's probably what people notice first, after noticing how weird-looking I am.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Soon I Will Be Invincible, The Blind Watchmaker, A People's History of the United States, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Cat's Cradle, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, Guns Germs and Steel, Orality and Literacy: The Technologizing of the Word, Les Miserables, Snow Crash, Dune, Skinny Legs and All, etc. etc. I love books-- reading them, feeling their weight-- even just the idea of literacy is somewhat spellbinding to me.

Movies: The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Brazil, Princess Mononoke, Whisper of the Heart, Kiki's Delivery Service, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, Cowboy Bebop, Spirited Away, Full Metal Panic, Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail, The Hudsucker Proxy, Focus, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dances With Wolves, The Matrix, The Princess Bride, Serenity, Star Wars, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Cyrano de Bergerac, Amelie, Lord of the Rings, The Man From Earth, tons more.

Music: Lately I've fallen hard for the music of Julia Nunes (jaaaaaaa on YouTube). Lauren O'Connell is also spectacular-- her guitar work is amazing, which you can hear at MySpace (irishloc) or YouTube (LaurenOC12). Also Pink Floyd, The Church, Crooked Fingers, Billy Bragg, Shivaree, Massive Attack, Bob Marley, Crash Test Dummies, Dragon Ash's excellent "Shizukana Hibi no Kaidan Wo", Matchbox Twenty, Jeff Buckley, Okkervil River, R.E.M., Ray Lamontagne, Sting, U2, Yoko Kanno, The Postal Service, Rilo Kiley, The National, Regina Spektor.

I want to take a second here to say that for the last few years or so we've lost some important heroes including Carl Sagan, Howard Zinn, Jeff Buckley and others, and I've been concerned that no one seems to have appeared to replace them. But when I hear from young musicians like Julia Nunes and read the brave words of Arundhati Roy or Naomi Klein, I'm given hope for the future. These are exciting times in all kinds of ways.

Food: Thai, Italian, Tex-Mex, Greek, Chinese, Japanese (incl. sushi), fondue. Various objects.

The six things I could never do without

Friends, family, an internet connection, books and more books, my mp3 player, my sense of honesty.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Creating something: an image, a program, a scene, a song, a sculpture. I've got to create something.

I also spend lot of brainspace on what in philosophy is called virtue or "the good"-- what's best in life-- and why we keep thwarting ourselves in achieving it. I'm really interested in doing right by everyone.

And I think about politics and society. I think that we as members of the greater society of humankind must recognize that while we perhaps may not all be equally valuable, we certainly all have a similar minimum value-- and we must act on that. Every one of us deserves a minimum standard of living that can generally be regarded as tenable. The challenge is in making that happen in practical and creative ways.

On a typical Friday night I am

Going to the theatre for a movie or a play, reading a new book, sculpting while I listen to NPR's "This American Life" or learning to play a new song.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

While recovering from major surgery, one of the long days I passed in bed was spent singing hair metal songs a capella-- Loudly and with much sincerity. I don't know why; it seemed like a fantastic idea at the time.

You should message me if

You should message me if you're curious about the world and are interested in talking about something new every day. Also if you're geeky: what could be finer?

Please don't message me if you're a fundamentalist who wants to bring me to your god or an ultra right-winger who wants to exorcise the socialist in me. I try to be open-minded and friendly to everyone, but I have a hard time being tolerant of intolerance.
