Biking Banjo Hiking Bluegrass Sociology
♫These are a few of my favorite things♫

I'm driven to find new experiences and knowledge. I'm the sort of person who goes to museums in their free time and is more likely to go to a bands performance because they are playing something I've never heard of before than something I know I like.

Travel and sociology/psychology are my favorite things. Having done a fair amount of the former, I love to look back through the lens of the latter, as well as applying it to the very tumultuous present, both here and abroad.

I LOVE cooking and while I'm no expert chef I'll try just about and damn thing you can come up with. Thanks to a proper upbringing I can cook a mean stir-fry and most Chinese dishes. If you can provide a recipe I'll give is a passable shot.

Thanks to a snap decision out of High school I managed to see a fair portion of the world while in the US Navy. Pull out a globe, put your finger anywhere between California and Iraq and I've most likely been there. I was particularly struck by Singapore and Thailand, and I hope to get back there some day.

I am seeking either a position as a garbage man at the South Pole or a graduate degree, whichever throws itself in my lap first.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm applying to the University of Virginia graduate school to pursue a Doctorate in Psychology, hoping to start in 2015 if they are dumb enough to let me back in.

I've finished off my degree in Sociology and loved every moment of it. I have been working in financial administration for the last 12 years and I recently finished a stint as a Fiscal Technician with the Department of Corrections, and am currently working as a Fiscal Tech with the Virginia-Maryland Teaching Hospital of Veterinary Medicine. I hope I don't see you at work.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Doing things just to say that I've done them, especially when it comes to food and music.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I look significantly younger than I am. It'll be FANTASTIC when I'm 40 but it can be a little awkward at the moment.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

FOOD! I love food. I work out and commute on a bike so I can eat more of it. Every weekend I cook something I've never had before, with varying results. I ended up making pirogi burittos once due to an error in filling-to-dough ratio but it worked out in the end.

Books: I'm more of a non-fiction guy than anything else. Travel writing and books especially. Historical accounts of cultural contacts and outdated anthropology books are my favorite.

I collect classic and antique books as well, mostly from the 50's through the 70's. I love the cover art and printing from the period.

For lasting, all time favorites:Grendel (A fantastic book), Big Dead Place, Cry of the Kalihari, A Brief History of Nearly Everything, On Killing, and anything by Terry Pratchett.

I really, really enjoy foreign films, going so far as to prefer subtitles to dubbing. I also enjoy schlock films far more than I am willing to admit in public and I LOVE a godawful c-budget action film from the 70's-80's. I go in for weird films too but just so I can say I saw them. I try to watch a couple older films a week, and will watch a current one if I can find someone to go with me.

Some specific flicks I have enjoyed are Mary and Max, Never Cry Wolf, Twilight of the Cockroaches, Once Upon a Time in the West, Across the Universe, and Run Lola, Run.

I range pretty far with my musical tastes as most people do, but I will always love Bluegrass.Carolina Chocolate Drops, and Nickel Creek, Doc Watson etc. I don't have an old beat-up pickup and a hound dog though so I might be missing part of the experience.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
-Comfortable shoes
-Good Mustard
-My bicycle
-Places I haven't been yet
-People who disagree with me
-My twin brother
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How things are going to turn out for the Millenial generation given the tremendous social and economic changes that have taken place in my life time.

Getting back into grad school to pursue my masters and doctorate. I also spend a great deal of time thinking about how I can afford to visit South-East Asia again because it was like visiting the Moon last time I was there and I love being absolutely out of my depth.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Working, working out, then finally being free to cook dinner, then eating whatever this weeks experiment was while watching a movie. I try to keep my misbehaving to Saturdays.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I listen to old radio plays on NPR on Sundays. I am also a hasher. You know...the drinking club with a running problem?
