My Self-Summary

DISCLAIMER: If I messaged you and you read this and are like "yeah, whatever, dude..", I DO appreciate it when you write back and say so, so that I'm not sitting around going like "huh?" and stuff... I have female friends on here who tell me how bad their inboxes can be, but seriously, I'll respect you more if you say "thanks but no thanks" instead of not replying!

And replying may prevent me from making a voodoo doll in your likeness!

Just kidding.. I don't play with dolls...

...anymore.

Now back to your regularly scheduled profile.

I are serious cat. This are serious profile.

I'm a unique and delicate snowflake.... just like everyone else!

But seriously, like the name implies, I am on a heroic journey to find my way home, metaphorically speaking, of course. Plus it looks like I've been on a boat for 10 years... perhaps one with an all you can eat buffet!

I am very yin/yang in many ways: I enjoy watching sports on TV and live (Gators and Tampa Bay Lightning, mostly) as well as going to symphonies, plays, operas, and other cultural outings; I read philosophical/psychology/science books as well as sci fi and fantasy; I enjoy a nice evening at home or a fun night out; I listen to heavy metal and classical, sometimes right after one another; I'm good at using my hands but not so good at fixing things that require too much manual labor; I can be solemn and introspective at times to witty and humorous; I read poetry (2nd generation Romantics and WWI poets are my favorite) and comic books; I'm extremely liberal in many ways yet don't lay claim to any one political ideology; I'm a seeker of enlightened ways but don't subscribe to any one religious belief; I like to read/learn about "new age" topics but I'm not all touchy feely about it. In short, I am who I am, and that can not be so easily summarized!

What I’m doing with my life

I'm currently a teacher but am working on going to grad school in the summer of 2010 to be a mental health counselor. This, of course, is not an invitation to dump your problems on me. Unless you are going to pay me. I accept visa, paypal, and home made chocolate chip cookies. Or oatmeal craisin. Yes I said craisin.

I'm the world's greatest dad. I have the coffee cup to prove it.

Playing as much music as I can. Learning about as much music as I can.

I’m really good at

playing music, making people laugh, especially at inappropriate times, being irrelevant and irreverent, attracting mosquitoes.

The first things people usually notice about me

the glint in my eyes, the shine on my head.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I like to read about Buddhism, mythology, quantum physics, alternative healing modalities, astronomy, Roman history, and race cars.. zoom zoom! Just kidding about the race cars.

I love a lot of different types of music, with maybe the exceptions of country, hard rap, and gospel. Some of my favorite bands, many of whom most have not heard, are The Tea Party, Dead Can Dance, Vas, VNV Nation, VAST, other bands that start with V that I can't think of right now, NIN, some old school 80s metal like Iron Maiden and Queensryche, Miles Davis, Sun Ra, 70s funk, early Prince (up to and including Purple Rain), middle and far eastern music, the Misfits, Henry Rollins, and Spandau Ballet. It's so true... funny how it seems....

I like movies that deal with time travel, parallel universes, or alternate realities like Donnie Darko, The Matrix, Jacob's Ladder, The 13th Floor, Dark City, etc. Oh, and now the new Star Trek movie, 'cause it has a messed up time line!

I'm also a huge Lost fan.. one of the only TV shows I watch. That and Big Bang Theory. Sheldon cracks me up.

The six things I could never do without

1. my boys (they are my world)
2. my bass (it's the other part of my world)
3. Music in general
4. Q-Tips
5. Space (read into that what you will!)
6. Did I mention music already? Damn... um.... books! Yes.. books... they're good, too.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

parallel universes, strange chord progressions, tapioca, words that rhyme with 'orange', the probability that imaginary numbers are real, world domination, world peace (if I were to rule the world, it would be peaceful, dammit!), protozoic infections and nematode infestations (I used to work in a microbiology/parasitology lab), and drinkable yogurt.

Metacognition. That means that I spend a lot of time thinking about thinking about thinking.

Apparently the world domination thing has a deeper, subconscious root. Two of the songs that I have written lately have to deal with either zombies or orcs taking over the world. Can you say "ego maniacal?" Neither can I....

EDIT: I'm going to throw in these key words that I've seen everywhere, just so I can be like other people: zombies, David Sedaris, poly, Sigur Rios, sushi, Rumi, quirky, snarky, Nicholas Sparks, Death Cab for Cutie

I'll add others as I find them.

On a typical Friday night I am

practicing with my band. I play bass and sometimes sing. I also play the cello, but not in the band. Not yet, at least. Well, probably never, but if we ever decided to go that route, I'm right there.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I have difficulty saying the word "similarly."

I own and use a Ped Egg. Not the one with the handle, though. I mean.. you lose pressure power with the handle..what's the point?

I have a hard time not using ellipses when I type.....

Richard Alpert and Desmond Hume are my man crushes.

The number of questions I have answered has no significance whatsoever...

or does it?

(it really doesn't)

You should message me if

Message me IMMEDIATELY if...

* you know who the Tea Party or Jeff Martin is.
* you know who Sun Ra is.
* you know why Love Supreme is the epitome of jazz.
* you can explain to me how to slide between universes.
* you look like Flo, the Progressive girl. (or better yet, ARE Flo, the Progressive girl!)
* you want to touch my bass.... go ahead.. it feels nice!

If you don't match any of that...try this!

You have an open mind (and know how to use it), a willingness to explore, a hint of mischief (or more than just a hint..down right mischievous is a good thing, too), funny, intelligent, have all of your teeth, or at least have great stories about how you lost them, and are willing to be your own string but who can vibrate together with another to make beautiful music. I dunno.. it's something I read in the Prophet.

I should also put this in: in addition to the ubiquitous "you know the difference between your/you're, their/there/they're", you should hopefully know how to use who/whom properly, as well as when to use "myself." Oh, and maybe how to correctly parallel a sentence and not leave your participles dangling. How embarrassing!

You didn't have to google anything I have in my profile. Except for maybe supercilious. I put that there just to be obnoxious :D
