never, and always, and nothing between
My self-summary Propose an edit
I am a musician,
writer and
artist ...and
believe it or not, that can be a curse most days. There's nothing
quite like one creative urge distracting you from another--
especially when you need to be working on the latter. People
sometimes don't know how to classify me. I enjoy sometimes, but
hate it mostly.
Here's my portfolio, for the curious: http://web.mac.com/roxby
I appreciate communication in its most direct form. I like hard,
glaring truths. I prefer criticism. I prefer rationality, yet, I
feel deeply. I like details. I like being analytical. I like being
intuitive. I like digging in and seeing what makes things tick. I
like language, but I feel that we deny ourselves, and our lives and
our realities too much by adhering slavishly to labels and symbols (in spite of my being a slavish
Symbolic Interactionist). We might try, instead to accept our
contradictions— to believe in gray, and the danger of black and
white. We should find the things that we love, and plumb the depths
of them. figuratively or literrally. Create. Be more than one
thing.
A few notes on sexuality: I have a strong proclivity for bisexual
boys; and no, I do NOT believe that they just "need some time to
come out of the closet" or "need to choose." I very nearly put
Bisexual for my own preference on this site, but the truth remains
that my attraction to men is strongest, and I could really only be
satisfied in a relationship with a male. In terms of sexual
politics and gender roles, I find that people who are bisexual echo
my own beliefs and preferences most often. My best friend in the
entire world, (and, for the sake of disclosure, my first
girlfriend) is a queer (bisexual) polyamorous gender theorist. I
love and respect her, and she was a definite proponent of these
theories during my formative years.
What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit
Freelancing as a composer and graphic designer. (Graphic design
pays the bills far more dependably, for the record) Working hard on
seekrit projects that no one will ever see. or everybody will.
Taking care of my aging grandmother. (Try it. It's not for the
faint of heart.)

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit
Usually, it's my hair, my eyes, or my deceptively outgoing
personality. (I am actually QUITE shy.) Nowadays, my shrinking
profile.

The six things I could never do without Propose an edit
Avoiding the hackneyed, if true, air-food-water route, let's list
instead, "six things I would rather not do without." (Isn't that
what they're really asking anyway?)
A Macintosh. An internet connection. Something to write on.
Something to draw with. Something to make noise with. My friends
(who are occasionally any and/or all of the previous three items on
the list. I sometimes vary the preposition to my own amusement)
I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit
Writing. Class structure. Cycles. Causality. Why Americans have
such a stick up their @$$ about most stuff, and how easily they're
lead around by the handle. Politics. Plots. Plot structure. Music.
Time dilation. The Salem Witch trials. Music. (thinking music and
thinking *about* music.) Cylons.
On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit

Waiting desperately for the next episode and/or season of BSG to
start.
(is it 2009 yet??)
The most private thing I'm willing to admit here Propose an edit
I've had lunch with Chuck Palahniuk, drinks with Slash and Leo
Furey and Alistair MacLeod, and hors d'oeuvres with Federika von
Stade.
Oh yeah, and I put my shoes and socks on: sock, shoe; sock, shoe.

want to make something with me. If you want to read me poetry, or
I, you.
