My self-summary
After years of searching elsewhere and growing skepticism about online dating, here on the advice of two friends who met and married on OKC. And, oh yeah, I have another friend getting married through an OKC match.

Not new to online sites, so I may be familiar to some viewers. Old pictures, even older pictures, and some new ones to boot.

I've tried the narrative summary, and honestly, they all sound the same and mine was borderline pretentious. I was inspired by another user and her non-sequiturs, which is really how we remember our lives and how we get to know each other.

•I'm "Iowa Nice."
•I’m always trying to do better. I don’t always succeed.
•I think too much, and it ain’t healthy.
•I once had a very green thumb, but seem to be losing it. I’ve lost my patience with plants, or they theirs with me.
•At the moment, my relationships with my family occupy my thinking more than do those with other people.
•I have great man legs.
•I know the Latin names for tons of plants and insects. Just don’t ask.
•I’m a big Public Radio listener.
•I grow a beard in winter and shave my legs in the summer. It's a comfort thing, honestly.
•I learned how to juggle in my sister’s flat in London, listening to “Court and Spark.” I got stuck at three balls – the basics.
•I can be a fierce and loyal friend. Friendship is an active relationship.
•I fought fires out west when much younger, and now set fires here and don’t go to jail.
•Bummed around Europe when I was 20. I’ve been to South Africa twice. I did a Snoopy dance on Robben Island because Capetown was so, so beautiful.
•I was in a Amsterdam for a half-day, May 2013. Damn. I spent considerably more time there when a youth (see above), and I can still see why one might never leave.
•I'm a forager, with a freezer full of wild fruit and mushrooms. I think I'm a foraging hoarder now that I think about it. i collect more than I need or can use. I also have a huge inventory of wild seeds, and a prairie restoration in Iowa.
What I’m doing with my life
I spent a long time doing natural area research. I loved the work. Eventually the job, not the work, began to sap my soul. I'm still transitioning in an effort to find what's still important to me. Let's just say the current job gave me a BAD case of poison ivy on my hands.
I’m really good at
Answering questions no one is asking. Yes, I'm Lisa Simpson.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
English major who is under-read. I've re-read both non-fiction and science fiction books. I favor history and travel books now.

I was a terrible cinephile once. There's very little that captures my attention with modern movies. I'm not sure why. Maybe I prefer the model-matting of the old Star Wars to the CGI of the modern Star Wars. I've seen many subtitled films. I have to admit that "Contact" is a guilty favorite, and that "The Godfather" is the perfect movie.

Nowadays, I have a pretty broad acceptance of music - African, folk, traditional, singer-songwriter. I just can't listen to contemporary country (Nashville, Inc.) and most rap. Musically, I'm a child of the 80's. Husker Du and the Minutemen (power trios) are etched on my sonic memory. Classic rock - yes. More recent acts. Sleater Kinney, Screaming Females (three again), and Fang Island (sorta three). Secret regional favorite? House of Large Sizes (three).

You can't go wrong with asparagus and morels especially if you throw in some ramps.
The six things I could never do without

My bikes (non-motorized, human-powered). I have three.

A camera

A place to escape (to)

The living world

The living word
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Where to go from here.

What kind of phone to get. I miss the days when phone service cost only $20.

The stories we tell ourselves.

Family and fragility.

The death of the natural world. "One of the penalties of an ecological education is that one lives alone in a world of wounds." - Aldo Leopold.
On a typical Friday night I am
In good weather, on my bike.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have a real weakness for women who ride bicycles. Not your casual rider, but women who can put in a couple of hours in the saddle. I don't mind having my butt kicked by a female rider. A friend once described this as a "fetish." I think it's more an issue of appreciating strength and autonomy.
I’m looking for
  • Girls who like guys
  • Ages 38–55
  • Near me
  • Who are single
  • For new friends, long-term dating, short-term dating
You should message me if
•I really am single, not looking to cheat. Not really a reason to message me, but just sayin' . . .
•You DON'T write in netspeak, and can write not just a sentence, but several sentences, in a coherent form demonstrating you read my profile and which lets a little of your personality shine through. I guess this is my test. "Hi's" and "Hellos" will be deleted.
•Would you look me in the eye in a grocery store?
•If you ride a bike - it's a big ice breaker. (See above).
•As I'm discovering, being existential would be a big help. It's about owning your decisions, something I see far few women do.
*Ladies, please ask a friend to take a picture of you. One self pic is enough. Few selfies even approach being a complimentary image. Somehow, I have pictures others have taken of me without really trying.
