My self-summary
Once, I was stabbed in the eye with a sword during a demonstration of historical fencing. After a few tellings of that story, I got bored of it and tried to come up with a more exciting way to explain my eyepatch, forgetting that sword related injuries are not a common danger for most people. In a way, this is a metaphor for my entire life.

I'm studying to be an English teacher, although I secretly want to be a dinosaur when I grow up. In the meantime, I work at a mental health facility where I help out at what is essentially an alternative school that does therapy.

I have a peculiar sense of humor, but I love sharing jokes, being silly, and finding nice pranks to pull on friends and coworkers.

I love being active, although I'm out of shape. I ran my first 5k in June 2013, and that one was a Warrior Dash (lots of pretty insane obstacles). I do medieval reenactment sometimes, where I focus on sword fighting. I love to go on walks or hikes with my dog, play softball on my work team, disc golf, tennis...anything that gets me up and moving, I tend to enjoy. I also have sedentary hobbies, like sewing, embroidery, video games, and Dungeons & Dragons.

I don't drink. I'm not pretentious about it, I just choose not to do it. I don't mind if I'm around people who are drinking and will frequently act as a DD.
What I’m doing with my life
Applying to grad schools and trying to help kids make better decisions in life. Also, I'm always seeking new ways to challenge myself.
I’m really good at
Growing beards. I didn't used to think this was a talent, but I consistently place in beard contests, so I guess I have something others don't. I'm also good at staying calm in pretty much all situations.
The first things people usually notice about me
Size and beard, more often than not. Sometimes my dog gets noticed first, but if I'm not walking him, it's that I'm a giant man with a good sized beard.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books - I primarily pick up fantasy or science fiction when I'm in the mood to read, but I really will read just about anything. The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold is very likely the best fantasy novel ever written. The James Herriot books are absolutely wonderful, Neil Gaiman, The Vorkosigan Saga (a series once again by Bujold), George R. R. Martin, Terry Pratchett, and the various sundry books you just end up having to read from being in the English department. Not Jane Austen, though. I can't put my finger on why, but I despise Austen's work. My favorite poet is Taylor Mali and love pretty much anything he writes.

Movie - Braveheart, Star Wars (original trilogy), Indiana Jones, Boondock Saints, and kung fu flicks or anything that goes boom.

Music - Depends on my mood. I've been into a lot of Flogging Molly lately, though. I also dig the Dropkick Murphys, The Pogues, Dance Hall Crashers, Nerf Herder, Flight of the Conchords, They Might Be Giants, and Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Please note that I, of course, kept these in strict alphabetical order.

Food - I have a sensitive stomach, which often cramps my style foodwise. I love Indian, nachos, pizza, burgers, steak...I'm willing to give just about anything a try, but spicy stuff will murder me to death.
The six things I could never do without
1) The eternal friendship of Pope Leo II. Sure, he's been dead for years, but it's eternal.

2) My dog, Hawkeye, even though he's kind of a jerk.

3) Something to do with my hands

4) My iPod, loaded with fresh podcasts

5) Mountain Dew Code Red

6) Laughter
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Whatever fresh interests I have. I'm curious about how things work, why they work that way, and what goes into making a thing or a skill. So, if I watch a movie and I liked it, I'll read up on the trivia about it. If I'm interested in a new hobby, I'll look up information on it, including the history of it, not just how to do it.

I also plan and execute a lot of pranks. I like to come up with nice surprises for people, so I'm always looking for something new.
On a typical Friday night I am
I often work on Fridays, so I rummage up some chow and relax with a book or some TV.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I'm actually shy.

It's an odd sort of shyness, though. I have no qualms about making a fool of myself in public, but I can almost entirely freeze up when it comes to talking to someone I don't know one on one. I have no idea why. Truthfully, it's kind of embarrassing.

Therefore, I am not that good at sending messages to people out of the blue, or otherwise initiating a first conversation. Words cannot describe how much I suck at it. If I send you a message and you're reading this right now...please be gentle.
You should message me if
First off, if you message me, I'll always respond. I hate getting ignored, so I won't do it.

You should message me if:

- you are nerdy or nerd tolerant
- passionate about something
- kind
- have a terrible sense of humor
- you are a pretty smart lady
