What I’m doing with my life
I am currently studying for my B.Sc. in Computer Science, which is pretty much a fancy way of saying "Being Useless", if doing nothing else. I have a passion for Computer Science and am looking forward to using that passion to do something useful. In the interim I try to impart my knowledge upon younger, more impressionable people for beer money.

I like the way this section heading is worded. "What I'm doing with my life"...it's wonderfully proactive. At the moment I am at a bit of an impasse while I work though a triumverate of depression, anxiety and OCD issues and catch up on stuff I've missed.

I’m really good at
Given that "really good" is relative and there are about 7 billion people I'm competing against, I don't think there's much I'm "really good" at.

However, if we lower the bar a little, I am found to be somewhat competent in the fields of general progression, regression, analysis, problem-solving, singing, the right things to say at the right moment, and a straight face.

I also have a mediocre knack with languages, resulting in my familiarity and varying degrees of semi-competency in a few written and spoken languages, the language of music, the language of computer instruction and the language of love.

In my limited circles of experience it seems I am quite good at making nerdy people laugh, coming up with strategies, and indiscriminate pattern-matching.

The first things people usually notice about me
For much of 2009 it was the top hat. A realistic estimate is that I wore my top hat completely unironically for 65% of the days since I purchased it that year. So if you've seen the strange woman in the top hat at UCT, give me a shout.

Nowadays it's usually the red lipstick, or the fact that I'm probably making some or other kind of off-colour joke. Or that I'm sort of manly.

Other that that, I'm really fucking weird, and it shows.

Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I am heavily understimulated. I read walls of text on the Internet. I like to go to the bookstore and pick out whatever book interests me the most. I am no longer reading The Black Swan, which is about statistical outliers and their implications, but it was an enjoyable read. I enjoy popular science (especially theoretical physics and quantum mechanics) but won't touch the math, so judge me all you want. Science fiction is a staple genre in the fiction direction.

I also love trashy bestselling authors like Augusten Burroughs, who writes like a Livejournal blogger in a most insane and entertaining way.

I don't watch many films compared to people I know, but I like the witty, tightly-executed ones.

Music takes up a lot of my time. Post-metal, post-rock, progressive rock, progressive metal, experimental rock/metal, sludge/doom/stoner metal, technical melodic death metal, experimental stuff, trip-hop, pop, The Scissor Sisters are among my favourite genres (with the exception of The Scissor Sisters), although I will listen to anything that sounds good to me. If I had to pick a favourite band, it would be Rosetta, for partly personal reasons, but also because they sound beautiful and fucking IMMENSE.

Foodwise, I enjoy things that taste good and have a complex flavour. I eat/love many bizarre foods but have not progressed to entomorphagy or coprophagia. However, I will keep this space updated. Now and again I find that a small child is what sates my fancy.

The six things I could never do without
Aside from the things that keep me respiring, I don't think there's anything that is compulsory to my existence. Here is a list of things that come close, along with some inconsistent bracketing:

Love (friends, lovers, family - love, even in its theoretical form, is a central part of my life)

Information (actually now that I think about it, it's more the lack of it - things would be pretty boring if I knew everything)

Music (although I still have a hard time figuring out why I enjoy it)

Language (being able to name things that do not exist and things that do, communication and all that good stuff)

Maths (I am bad at math, but it features too much in my everyday life to ignore)

My glasses (for seeing things that are more than 15cm away from me)

I spend a lot of time thinking about
The mechanics of life, love, people, and being human. Calculating life. Optimizing what is tangible. Cause and effect. Music. I could wax lyrical about any one of these topics, but brevity appeals to me.

The latest question on my mind is, "Is human faeces Halaal and/or Kosher?". Google serves no adequate answer, I am disappointed, and I will probably forget this question by morning.

Update: Now having a little more knowledge of Kashrut laws, I am satisfied with the answer that faeces is not Kosher. And I recall reading that it is Haram on a Muslim messaging board, but please correct me if this is wrong.

On a typical Friday night I am
Distracting myself from everyday life, being with the people I love most (my friends), or drinking myself into a dull stupor to the sound of my own heartbeat.
