I think of myself as a relatively highly evolved person. I'm thoughtful, creative, and kind. I'm looking for someone to share a laugh with. I tend towards silly, irreverent humor and I'm the guy who's not embarrassed to make the dumb joke (maybe because others are so readily embarrassed for me).
You might even find me funny. If not you'll probably find me insufferable. But I'd be equally comfortable as the "straight man" in our "double act". In truth, it's probably cover for the fact that underneath, I might just be a little shy.
I don't look/act/feel as ancient as OKC claims I am, but I do have some grown up responsibilities (at least for a musician) that demand a good deal of my time. I have two kids and they mean the world to me. But they don't, however, define me. And they have a mom so don't panic. (We're on good terms–separated for a few years now although still married in the eyes of NY State...and um, god I suppose. But we are living separately, not a couple, moving on, etc. Figured I should put that out there in the interest of full disclosure).
I love playing chess. I'm a better teacher than I am a player.
Somehow I ended up with a pet lizard?! He needs a fresh salad every day. (Who doesn't for that matter?)
What else...Let's see...I'm attempting to grow a pineapple on my balcony. It isn't going so hot. [update: starting over. Will it work in the falltime if I bring it indoors?]
My media preferences... Okay. I can't really see that anyone cares much about this stuff. I usually glaze over reading through this section. But for anyone who's just gotta know....
I haven't had a television in a few years and I don't really miss it—except maybe Flight of the Concords. My kids keep me pretty busy and so I don't get to watch a lot of movies, although I love them. So while I have a healthy "to-do" list of films I want to see, I usually end up seeing stuff they can watch. Luckily, my own tastes run equal parts highbrow and lowbrow. I'm as content with "Happy Gilmore" as with Kurosawa so it works out okay.
Reading, too, has been hard in recent years. But I do love me a good yarn. Fiction primarily. Anything slightly impossible. I broke down and got a Kindle and that has made it easier to steal a few pages now and then. I just finished "Ender's Game" (good fun). Now I'm into "Gone Girl". The writing is engrossing. The subject matter: a bit of a downer. [Update: finished "Gone Girl".... kinda loved it. Its intensity follows an exponential curve, snapping together in the end like a pair of magnets. "Clack!" However I'm sooo not going to make this my running literary blog. I'm done here]
Music – I'm a musician, and I kinda dread this question. My taste is all over the map. I have an educated ear, an open sensibility, and I'm not elitist about what I like. Music is so polarizing and people react with such weird dogma about what they "hate"—such a strong word to describe something that someone, somewhere, is putting out into the ether in an attempt to make it a better place. Just my two cents.
Anyhow, for whatever reason, my wiring doesn't catalog music by name. I couldn't make a decent list if I wanted to (and I don't). I'd much prefer to let someone else take over DJ duty; gladly (selfishly?) soaking it all in. Don't worry, there will be plenty to talk about. Music is important to me and I listen actively. (I play things back from memory and understand the details of the arrangement or how something was recorded/mixed, etc). Discovering music is an endless journey which easily overwhelms the senses. It's real-life magic. Yada yada yada....
A creative outlet
A problem to chew on (to keep my brain from chewing on itself)
When did you people start taking all these pictures of yourselves with fake mustaches? What's going on? I don't understand.
Who's the genius who thought it would be a good idea to put a touchscreen behind the headrest on this fucking airplane and how long is the jackass behind me going to keep poking me in the back of my head? Good god, are they playing Bejeweled?
