I tend to enjoy dissonance, and music which leaves a strong
emotional impact (of whatever kind). Emotional purity and
innovations in form both appeal to me. Really the means (genre,
instruments, whatever) don't matter so much as something powerful
being conveyed, preferably in an interesting way. I primarily enjoy
music I can sink into, and listen to again, and again. I'll tend to
get one snippet of a track snagged in my head, and (for a while)
want to listen to it forever.
Bands I've been listening to a lot of lately include:
Coil, The Knife, Shonen Knife, my bloody valentine, Converge, Girls
Aloud, Sepultura, The Ronettes, Le Tigre, Electric Wizard, The
Shangri Las, Merzbow, Patrick Wolf, Neutral Milk Hotel, Boards of
Canada, Sleater Kinney, Missy Elliott, Frank Ocean, The Pixies,
Aphex Twin, Azealia Banks, Fever Ray, Atlas Sound, Lee 'Scratch'
Perry, Howling Wolf, Tom Waits, Squarepusher, The Cure, Bikini
Kill, Interpol, grimes.
In terms of composers, I can't get enough of Dvořák. Suggestions of
similar would be warmly welcomed. :)
Don't read them that often, except for work. I read lots of
articles, though. I especially enjoy anything about gender
politics, especially materialist feminism.
Also, Neoplatonism (Plotinus, Porphyry, Iamblichus, Proclus, the
Cappadocian Fathers...that early stuff).
My favourite show is Wicked. I have a long spiel about how it's all
about Reagan's America, the life and absorption of grunge, and the
impotency of individual-centred protest, which I'd love to bore you
Films / TV
When I watch TV, I tend to binge whole series. Most recently was
The Wire. I also generally lack the attention span to view
something unless I'm with someone, but I'm happy to when that's the
case. So, viewing buddies are definitely appreciated. :)
Recent films I've enjoyed are Brick, Angel-A, and Requiem For A
Tofu, macaroni cheese, spinach, avocado, polenta.
