I am affable, introspective, and whimsical.

My Self-Summary

I run with the moose. I can type faster than any animal in the forest. I sit in front of a computer for 12+ hours a day, but I usually have dirt under my fingernails. (I do a lot of gardening and I rescue native plants from construction sites.)

I'm in love with life and trying to live it to the fullest. I enjoy connecting with self-aware, open-minded people. I love analyzing life, relationships, and interactions. If you enjoy long, deep conversations, I would like to meet you.

I value creativity, humor, honesty, beauty, and joy. I love animals and plants, and I feel a strong connection with nature.

I live in Bellevue with divadespina, my wife and best friend.

What I’m doing with my life

Meaningful, rich connection is far too rare in our society. I've always felt that lack, and I'm doing what I can to change it, but I'll probably need help from some of you.

I'm striving to make my life a continual process of learning and personal growth. I have an enormous list of things I want to learn and understand. I'll never get through the list, but I'm giving it my best shot.

I'm also trying to keep my inner child alive. Half the time I think I'm too silly and frivolous, and half the time I wish I were more silly and frivolous.

I’m really good at

Rock, Paper, Scissors. I recently won $3 in prize money for taking first place at a local RPS tournament! I enjoy RPS (or "The Dance of Hands") for many reasons: It combines dexterity, subtlety and quickness of wit, and sheer force of will. Truly the game of kings.

The first things people usually notice about me

If they met me through OkCupid, they notice that I'm not huge. Apparently my photo makes me look like I'm 6'2", when in reality I'm of average height. I do have a robotic arm though.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Authors: Gene Wolfe, Vernor Vinge, H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Charles Wilson, Roger Zelazny, Dan Simmons, Robert Heinlein, Philip Pullman, Chaim Potok.

Movies: Adaptation, Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Children of Men, No Country for Old Men, Being John Malkovich, Donnie Darko, Dr. Strangelove, Ed Wood, Duck Soup, Princess Mononoke, The Wicker Man (1973), Vertigo.

Music: Blonde Redhead, The Arcade Fire, Built to Spill, Deerhoof, The Flaming Lips, Fugazi, The Futureheads, Neutral Milk Hotel, The New Pornographers, The Postal Service, The Shins, Sufjan Stevens, White Stripes. NEW: The Thermals!!

Classical: Bach's Cantatas, Beethoven's symphonies, Mozart's operas, Schubert's lieder, Haydn's string quartets. Wagner, Verdi, Brahms ... and many more.

The six things I could never do without

Mahonia nervosa, Vaccinium ovatum, Polystichum munitum, Oemleria cerasiformis, Arbutus menziesii, Thuja plicata.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

What constitutes wisdom? How can I attain it?

What is the nature of consciousness? How much free will do we really have? Aren't we just a series of chemical reactions?

Which of my deeply-ingrained assumptions and beliefs are mere cultural baggage that I would rather shed?

What makes great music great?

Other areas of interest include: Classical music, biology, psychology, anthropology, archaeology, film, science fiction, history, art, computers, programming, politics, relationships, polyamory and the poly lifestyle, and many more.

On a typical Friday night I am

Doing something I really love.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I don't think I like eggplant. I've always wanted to like it because I love the color and shape of a nice eggplant. I finally got to try it, and I found it was mostly flavorless. That gorgeous color promises so much... I still get a surge of joy whenever I see one, even if I don't want to put it in my mouth.

You should message me if

You enjoy analyzing and discussing life, film, literature, or classical music. Or if you're interested in gardening, landscaping, or Northwest native plants. Or if you want to for any other reason!

** NEW: Especially if you want to go hiking on weeknights Bellevue, possibly on a regular basis.
